Hey ricky...this is an issue for a lot of people.  It's difficult, because a lot of times, a medication would be indicated due to debilitating anxiety, yet a person has a very hard time getting past the anxiety of the med itself.

I'm going to PM one of our other CL's, CJ, who went through this.  He always has good suggestions.  The recommendations I would have would be to one...not over research a medication.  It's one thing to educate yourself, which I would recommend to anyone, but it's another to search the internet all day long and overwhelm yourself with information.

Two...when you ARE reading about a medication, try not to let the more scary warnings frighten you.  The manufacturers HAVE to report absolutely everything, even if it's such a rare possibility.  If ONE person who was taking a med has a heart attack after starting it, it will be mentioned, even if the doctors can't definitively say if the med was the culprit or not,.  When something is reported as "less common" or "rare"...they are just that...rare...keep that in mind.

Third...remember that even IF you do experience side effects, they will start to improve by about week 2, with a complete abatement not long after.  Sometimes you DO have to feel a little worse before you can feel better.  You can always ask your doc for some help with the side effects.  It's very common to be Rx'ed a short term course of an anxiolytic, like Ativan, or Xanax,...during the adjustment phase, to help combat the side effects. I was taking Ativan as needed while I adjusted to the SSRIs, and it helped a lot.

Lastly....it's so important, as hard as it is...to stay busy and keep yourself distracted.  The more you focus on how you feel, the more anxious you will become, because you will overanalyze every little sensation. If you find yourself ruminating about something...tell yourself (out loud even).."stop"!  Then, get out for a walk, or get involved with something that will get your mind off of how you feel.

You're in therapy, correct?  I would suggest to you that you communicate that you feel you need more frequent therapy sessions for a while, until you can get this to a more manageable level.  When my panic was at its worst, I was going to therapy 2-3 times a week.  I needed it, and man did it help!

Hang in there buddy!

If you read the side effects of Motrin you will find lots of frightening things but they are super rare, so millions take painkillers like this without thinking twice or ever experiencing any problems. A doc told me no drug can have an effect without also creating side effects.

Wonderfully said as always!

It helps so much to hear it from someone who went through it! I'be had some side effects, but thankfully, I never had severe anxiety about the med itself.  I was so anxious and simply fed up with hiding in my house that I would have went along with ANYTHING I thought would help me!

I am sorry that you are going through this right now.  I know it is tough and very challenging but you are going to get through it.

Nursegirl is spot on but I also wanted to share with you my experience with medication:

Originally, I was against taking in forms of medication for two reasons...one, my pride got in the way and I just didn't want to acknowledge that I needed any help.  Two, I would be so anxious and nervous about even taking them that I scared myself about the potential side effects.

Once I realized that my pride was a hinderance, the second hurdle was initially a little tougher to overcome in my experience...just as a disclaimer, I have and do take medication and I believe it has really helped me confront my anxiety...but initially I was terrified to even try them.  I would go online and read about potential side effects which was not a help.  For example, when I first started taking an SSRI (Zoloft), I attributed any 'out of the ordinary' feeling that I had as a direct result of taking it whether it was related or not.   Remember, that we are already anxious anyways...I tended to become so hyper aware of what I thought the potential side effects could be that I related it back to the Zoloft itself when in fact it was my anxiety.  Now, there are some side effects that I did notice when I would start on medication but they would go away as time went on.

I look at it this way.  If I had a high blood pressure or high cholesterol and diet and exercise alone couldn't get it down and my doctor recommended a medication to help, I would not bat an eye about taking it.  I look at anxiety as the same way.  While it is not a 'cure all,' by any means, I believe it is a VERY useful tool for someone while they confront their anxiety through counseling.

Are there side effects?  I am sure there are a few for me, but I also look at it this way and it maybe over simplistic, but I always try to see if the benifets outweigh the costs/side-effects and in my case they do by a very large margin.  Furthermore, I also realize there have been literally millions of people prescibed these medications....successfully and safely.  Good news stories are not as popular as bad news stories, so it can be a lot easier to convince yourself that taking a certain medication may be scary.  I actually get more side effects from anitihistamines or even a couple cups of coffee.

I usually try to suggest for people to first keep an open mind about it and be patient with the process.  Also, keep an open line of communication between your prescribing doctor and/or counselor.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Keep your head up...anxiety is a tough challenge and you have chosen to confront it.  In my opinion, that is very respectable and takes a lot of courage.  Feel free to ask as many questions as you like.  Also, you can email me here as well if you want to share anything or just to ask questions.

I hear you...it's tough to overcome.  Tell your therapist you'd like to address that specifically.  He/she will give you some recommendations.
