Am I Crazy?

I'll try to condense this as much as I can.    I've been having numbness of hands and feet and strange episodes of "brain fog".  Was on Lexapro 10 mg once daily for 5 months for anxiety.  Rapid weight gain, no relief from anxiety.  Tapered off to 5 mg daily over 2 wk period, then to 5mg q.o.d.  after about 36 hrs of no Lexapro, I have dizziness, sharp pains in my head, and other strange things.  Dr. gave me Prozac 25mg to help ease the blow, but I'm still having these symptoms.  All blood work came back fine, so he isn't too concerned.  However, still having numbness and tingling in hands and feet and I'm in a daze most of the time.   Is this a sign of being insane?

The deal with insanity, as the green one has so delicately expressed it, is that if you are of such sound mind as to be able to articulate your sensations and all the before-and after narrative that goes along with it, then you are possessed not only of your senses but also of your cognition. What you are experiencing is the strangeness of your situation and, yes, by gosh and by golly, it wierds you out. Which leaves open the question of where do you go from here.

And again, as GL has indicated, you schlep back to the doctor, and, feet planted firmly, hands on hips, tell him or her that "this ain't workin!" and insist on a bit more thorough inspection and diagnosis.

And if that doctor be unwilling, THEN you ask for a psych referral, just for your own satisfaction. We're talking about YOU, here, so don't sit humbly by while the provider blows it off.

Meanwhile, continmue to interact with all the folks here who know ZACTLY what you're talking about and will cover you all the way.

'nuff said?

Now, go.

Emphatically NO! You are NOT insane. (Did you know that the truly insane NEVER ask that question!)
Since you have seen your doctor and have had various tests done, all negative, have been tried on a couple of meds, which apparently aren't doing the trick for you, then it's time for yet another visit to your doc. Perhaps you did not give the various meds adequate time to reach therapeutic levels, which can be difficult as some can take as long as a month to really begin to help.........and while you're waiting for that to happen, you are still experiencing some of the symptoms. Sometimes we need to be patient for the meds to work, but those of us with anxiety issues are usually rather lacking in the patient department. Prozac is one of the meds that can take up to a month to reach it's therapeutic level.........how long have you been taking it?
A question..........were you having the numbness in your hands and feet and the "brain fog" BEFORE you began the Lexapro or AFTER? Since you are still having these symptoms, I would make sure my doctor addressed these concerns before sending you on your way with yet another script for who knows what this time.
While numbness and that brain fog feeling are really common symptoms of anxiety, there are also other reasons for them. I don't want to scare you, but I also don't think your doctor should just blow these off as anxiety related. The numbness in your hands and feet could be (I repeat COULD BE) a sign of a circulation problem, (there are other reasons as well) and the brain fog could be a sign of perimenopause. (I had that something awful!) So, you get the numbness and the brain fog and begin to get freaked about that, then you become obsessed about them and before long you have reached a point of being very anxious about them..........by the time you get to your doctor, it's the anxiety he is seeing and the original symptoms just get lumped in with that DX.
I repeat myself here, but I honestly believe it's time to go back to your doctor and make him really listen to you this time. If those symptoms were there before, he needs to back his train and/or stethascope up and address THOSE issues first before handing out any more "head meds!" And, in my humble opinion, if he insists on ignoring your other symptoms, I would find another doctor.
Good luck............please keep us posted, OK?
Peace
Greenlydia (who also is NOT insane!)
