I didn't recommend medication, I recommended natural medicine.  You get a gastroenterologist through your insurance, you try to pick one who is highly respected.  A recommendation from your doctor is probably a good idea.  You get a psychiatrist who takes insurance that way as well, but sometimes the better ones don't take insurance, so you try to get a reference.  There are consumer guides that rate doctors in many areas, also a good resource.

Well, I'm not sure there is a "normal" when it comes to humans.  Your experience of IBS doesn't even necessarily match that of others.  I might suggest that you look into different treatments than maybe you've considered so far, though you might have already tried them.  Natural medicine sometimes has better solutions, sometimes not.  For digestive disorders, often changing diet, lifestyle, and taking natural remedies that are more gentle than medication and therefore allow the body to gently adapt might give you more relief in this case than doctors treating the symptoms with medication.  Maybe you can solve the problem instead of just managing it.  Worth a try if you haven't tried this approach yet.
