There is also a great website, www dot benzobuddies dot org that has a plethera of tapering information, in all different kinds of ways.  The forum there is also really great if you do not quite understand the method or have questions.  I hope this helps.

Yes, your doctor will help you wean yourself safely and correctly off the Xanax. Please don't attempt it yourself. While you are with your doctor, discuss why you felt the need to go back on the Xanax after so many years without it. There are other meds out there to help with anxiety that do not carry the burdens of Xanax. And perhaps therapy alone will be enough to get you through this rough patch without any meds at all. But if meds are indicated, discuss your many options with the doctor or therapist.
Best of luck

Yes, under a doctor's supervision is the way to get weaned off of Xanax. Is there a reason you feel that you need to get off the Xanax right now? I guess my question is if you don't take Xanax, have you dealt with the issues surrounding the reason you are taking it in the first place, or do you want to replace it with a different medication or counseling?
I have a prescription for 1mg of Xanax 3x a day...if I take it all (which lately I have been taking it daily) I only take one in the morning...that's usually when I know I need one that day. I also am just now getting ready to begin seeing a therapist, and until both he and I feel that I don't need Xanax anymore, I am going to keep taking it when I need it, and carry it with me when I don't. When we decide that I don't need it, or I find myself not taking it very much at all, then I will work with my doctor to wean myself off of it if tht is what I need to do.
Fortunately for me, unlike many people who's posts I read, I don't have any withdrawal symptoms when I don't take it for weeks at a time. It appears though that I am the exception rather than the rule.
Good luck,
Suzy
