Anxiety can hit us right out of the blue for no apparent reason. How it hit is not as important as "why" and addressing this and your symptoms with your doctor is what you need to do.

Therapy to learn why you are so anxious and to learn relaxation techniques is your only other option. But therapy can be a lengthy process and this is where medication helps a lot. Don't give up on medication, it is often trial and error as to what will work best for us, but once we find the right one....it's well worth it. You need to decide which is worse...the anxiety...or the side effects of the medication. There are medications with fewer side effects than others, and you need to work closely with your doctor regarding this. When your heart rate rises, do deep breathing exercisies, slow deep breaths in thru your nose and slowly out of your mouth. We tend to breath more shallow with anxiety, and this assures that you are getting plenty of oxygen. We often can't handle this on our own, and medication and therapy are needed. Look at this like any other medical condition that requires daily medication to control the symptoms, because it's no different. Don't get hung up on thinking because it's a mental issue that you should be able to handle it on your own, this rarely....if ever happens. See your doctor again and follow his advice, he is your best resource right now and knows best how to help you. Good luck and take care.
