Okay, an honest question for the Almighty Peek

Okay, well, just wanted to start by saying that I love this group.  Peek, I loved reading your journals, and you always had great advice and information.
Now for my question:  I had preeclamsia at the end of my pregnancy, and was placed on a beta blocker (labelolol 200 mg bid).  I also pumped, but after about 3 weeks, my supply died.  Did the beta blocker have that effect on my milk or was it my diet?
I also wondered if my taking prilosec had any effect on my son's acid reflux?
Ok, so it was two questions.  Any other advice about infant acid reflux are definitely appreciated!

You might try giving him some infant probiotics.  There have been studies that show they are more effective than anti-reflux meds.

i think he'd be better if it was any of those factors that contributed to his reflux. Since you stopped bf and he still has problems, it's unfortunately just something he has.

dd is on zantac too. if he starts to get worse, be sure to contact the dr to get his dosage changed. my little one gained so much weight so quickly, we had to change her dose after just 3 weeks. She gained 2 lbs in that time, and when we recalculated her dose based on her new weight it was actually double the original dose. I was surprised, but as my dh pointed out, it was a 20% change in weight.

by the way, my LC said colic and reflux often go hand in hand. Most babies have a fussy period naturally, but when you throw in the discomfort/pain of reflux that fussiness becomes very colic-like.

Well, my first problem with nursing was that I was on Magnesium in the hospital, which made both of us really sleepy for the first day, and I didn't get a great latch to start.  I had one day where it was really working out in the hospital, but then he had jaundice, and wasn't getting enough from me, so I was supplementing and breast feeding.  I ended up pumping while in the hospital, and I rented one of their pumps to bring home for a month.  I will admit that I didn't pump as often as I should've, but I didn't have the opportunity as often as I would've liked either.  I was pumping 15 minutes every 2-3 hours but then my supply started to dwindle, and I went down to every 4 hours.  It only took me two days of engorgement to go back to normal.  I honestly never had any leaking, and my breasts never responded to his cries.  I am still happy that I was able to pump for 4 weeks, and I ended up losing all of my baby weight, plus another 15 lbs in a matter of weeks.
I'm just hoping that my history of acid reflux, my diet, my meds, and the breast milk didn't contribute to his acid reflux.  Originally they couldn't decide if it was colic or reflux but he was vomitting the hypoallergenic formula, so it's definitely reflux.  He's on Zantac and I'm hoping that we dont have to make too many med changes.

if i may chime in...

did you nurse and pump or only pump? It is possible your supply tanked simply because some people don't respond well to pumps, or you didn't have a good pump (hospital grade), or you didn't pump frequently enough (15 minutes every 2 hours). Like Peek said, it could've been totally out of your hands. I know someone who tried every pump under the sun but couldn't get a drop. When her son finally learned to nurse months later, she had plenty to nourish him.

My diet was poor immediately post partum with both babies- i had no appetite and no time to eat. I don't think poor diet alone is enough to significantly affect supply. Even moms in countries experiencing famine can make milk to feed their babies.

i wouldn't blame yourself for the reflux either. I don't take any meds and DD has terrible reflux that we can barely manage with meds. Although, I did recently discover that onions make her significantly worse.

Beta blockers should not inhibit milk supply, but can readily cross and enter the milk supply.
Infants of mothers who are breastfeeding and taking BB's must be monitored for growth, development, and cardiac/respiratory issues.

There are so many things that could affect milk supply that its almost impossible to address them all.  Sometimes you can do everything *right*, yet still have poor supply.  Not commonly,, but it does happen.

I don't know if Prilosec can affect an infants acid reflux.  I don't know anything much about pediatrics, actually.  I could make up a decent sounding answer, but its pretty much hit or miss as to accuracy.
