Toileting problems are common under many different diagnosis. I agree with the other two posts. List your concerns and ask for a multi-disciplinary team assessment. My son is 7 with autism but he was toilet trained at the age of 3. However I can't get him out of his rigid routine of having to have me check he has wiped his bottom okay, but I am hoping to break that routine before he is adult!! Also he cannot urinate standing up. I think this is a sensory difficulty in his ability to understand internal feelings such as hungry/thirstly/full etc. He somehow cannot relax the muscles standing up.
If you have concerns, keep going to see the professionals until you get an answer. I had a gut feeling things weren't right from the age of 2+. But all the professionals I saw told me the behaviour I was concerned about (not talking, repeating TV dialogue) was normal for boys. But as soon as he started school all the professionals were called in within 6 months because he just couldn't cope in that environment.
First off eye sight has nothing to do with autism .My autistic son has wonderful eyesight and so does many others I know. Did your daughter/daughter in law try to get medicaid from state for child? My son has Aspergers Syndrome and still wears diapers,he is almost 5, I know kids in their teens with autism that are also still in diapers and there are others with autism that are potty trained too. ADHD and Autism are very similar I had a friend that has a daughter and they first tried to diagnose her with Autism and now find out its just ADHD but Autistic kids can also have other disorders too like ADHD and bi-polar and so on... The mother also needs to insist they evaluate the child. My son's doctor just kept saying " Oh he's just a typical boy and stuff and when my other son was making more progress with development I insisted that they get him evaluated and sure enough he was diagnosed with Autism!
THE DR. DID A 'WELL CHILD' SCHOOL CHECK UP JUST AS SHE'D DONE HIS WELL BABY ONES WHEN HE'D GET HIS SHOTS N STUFF. THAT'S THE POINT ~ WHY WASN'T THIS EYE PROBLEM ADDRESSED UNTIL HE WAS IN SCHOOL !?! AND, IN MY THINKING , IF SHE MISSED SOMETHING LIKE THE VISION WHAT ELSE WAS MISSED !!!
THANKX FOR THE OTHER INFO.
The school can do an eval free of charge provided they get a refferal letter from someone (maybe you). Anyone can make a refferal, it doesn't have to be a doctor. I just don't understand why vision is the only thing the doctor checked?
Just detail your concerns and ask for a multi-disciplinary team evaluation. Be concise and address the letter to the local school district office attention special education dept.
