He has an appt with his Dr in July so will definitely bring this up. Your mention of whether he is aware that he needs to go or not makes sense.
Ha, then Bri, I gave you very bad advice on the other forum. Sorry! That does complicate the situation.
Hm, I wonder if you can do the strategy of having something enticing in the bathroom and then he is sent there every 45 minutes until he gets it?? what about leaving him naked for a couple of hours or as long as you can stand it with a long t shirt over him (no diaper or underwear). do you think he'd just go or would he get the idea to go to the bathroom that way? I ask because these are strategies moms use for little ones that are so young that I wouldn't have even attempted potty training yet at that point. So, developmentally, they aren't very mature.
My oldest son has sensory integration disorder. Does your child receive nerve signals correctly have you determined? meaning, his body sends the message to his brain so he is aware that he has to go??? I think I'd talk to either your ot or your pediatrician about this for good ideas too.
Toys R Us is amazing is all I have to say lol. Thanks for the tips guys, I went to TRU and the manager was amazing. For anyone who might have the same issue - Pampers Splashers. They have larger sizes than Huggies Little Swimmers. And they worked great in the pool.
@specialmom - Ive posted in a lot of forums sometimes asking the same thing. Which can sometimes lead to me forgetting to mention crucial information. Yes my 5yr old has Autism but is high functioning. Potty training has been impossible with him. We have him in PullUps for 4T-5T and hes almost out grown those.
However, your insight about not going pee or poop during the day was interesting. He can go HOURS without needing changed. Thankfully he tells us when he needs changed so its not too bad. Just frustrating. Maybe once a month I successfully can get him to use the toliet. Then he outright refuses afterward.
There exist many types of swim diapers for older kids, but I think you may have to order them and wait for them which is not ideal if you are going on saturday. You may find some alternatives here probably: http://www.especialneeds.com/diapers-pads-incontinence-swim-diapers.html
Okay, I may have you confused with another poster. There was someone asking about school and their 5 year old who wasn't potty trained who had no developmental issues. Sorry!!! Thought that was you.
They make underjams to sleep in for older kids but in all honesty, I wouldn't trust them in a pool to hold. As my son got parasites from swimming one summer in a pool, it's no fun. Pools are really sticky about the rules and your child could get even your other kids sick if he has an accident of number two in the pool.
This sounds like a hard situation. good luck
Probably can't take him in a regular pool. May be motivation to get him potty trained?? You posted on another forum and didn't mention anything like autism with your child. Is our son autistic?
If not, there is no reason why a 5 year old should be going pee and poop during the day. Some kids of that age do wet at night while sleeping but during the day, that is really unusual.
good luck
