L4 & L5

I have a herniated disc l4 l5 with a fragment on the right side. Is it possible the fragment could heal itself without surgery? My family doctor said that unless the fragment is removed the tingle sensation and pain will continue, I was wondering if taking an anitinflamatory and physical therpay would help or hurt my situation.

Sincererly,
becky Lucas

There are two kinds of slipped discs in general: the contained type and the non-contained or sequestrated disc. Perhaps you are referring to the latter.
If you are symptomatic from a sequestrated disc in general we would recommend microsurgical/endoscopic removal. This is a minimally invasive procedure with a quick recovery and minimal pain. I would agree that you should find a good spine surgeon.

In 1984 I was operated for a herniated disc (L5-S1) which was fragmented.  It has to be operated and taken out if it is fragmented.  Make sure you get a good surgeon, but get it done.  You will be so much happier afterwards.
