Firefighter w/ shifting back pain, side to side for no reason

For about 6 months, I have had reoccuring back pain in my lower back.  It shifts either left or right side, but never both.  It causes pain in my hips and knees, again dependany upon which side hurts.  Also, if I put my hand on the painful area in my back, I can feel it while I walk, shifting.  The area is really tight, like a pulled muscle and cracks when I rub it. Also, if I rub it, the area gets very hot,

I am an active volunteer firefighter/emt so I lift a lot and also spend all day getting into an out of cars for work, I sit in a car on average 8 hours a day,

I went to a doctor, but the dat I went, I didn't have the pain or the tightness to show him.

Any thoughts would be great!!  Also, is a chiropractor worth it?
