Spine

Hello, I have had an MRI done recently and it says, "A 1.6cm vertebral body hemangioma is seen within L1 vetebral body. Also disc desiccation, mild annular disc bulge measuring 0.5cm AP without spinal or foraminal stenosis. Focal left posterocentral disc protrusion (0.6cm AP) noted at L5-S1 which contacts the pre-existing left S1 nerve root. Can you tell me how serious the above is? Thank you so much

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
If you have back pain or pain in the leg, then it could be due to the irritation of S1 nerve root due to disc protrusion. You could try conservative measures like physiotherapy, traction, pain killers, spinal manipulation etc to help the disc to fall back into original position.
If this does not help then the hemangioma could be the cause of pain. This is are treated with radiation therapy to reduce the size. Embolization of the artery supplying the tumor is another method to reduce its size. Surgical removal is at times possible but not the preferred treatment. Please discuss with your doctor. Take care!
