Bipolar I medications

Hey everybody..

I'm wondering why my doctor prescribed Welbutrin for my bipolar. Then after two weeks of taking it he prescribed me Zoloft because the Welbutrin wasn't working for me. Just curious

Lets see how well my brain works now-a-days..

I was on the Wellbutrin, for my bipolar. I'm not even sure why he put me on Wellbutrin. That's the only meds he prescribed me the first time around. I originally had went to him for my depression, and within the visit I was diagnosed BP I.

After two weeks of taking the Wellbutrin, I went back to him for something else because those meds were really making me rapid cycle, way worse than before. They also made me dumb-founded, like stoned I guess lol.

So then, he put me on Zoloft. He put me on both meds without a mood stabilizer. I took the Zoloft for a little bit. Yet again, I couldn't handle it due to side effects. I am yet to see my doctor. I'm still trying to get some things in order so that I can see a psychiatrist instead. It's tough when funds are tight.

I'd love to find something that will keep me out of my 'highs' and my 'lows'. Something that'll just keep me normal. My highs are so high, that I don't even need drugs to get high. I just get high naturally, and I can't handle it. It's like I'm high, then I'm down, without even coming down from the high, it's just instant. Not sure if others experience that, but it's pretty vivid for me.

Not only do I suffer from bipolar, but I also suffer from anxiety, social anxiety/phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, delusions, and insomnia. Not sure if I left a disorder out, it's just really late and I'm a complete zombie.

From what I've read, Wellbutrin is one of the few ADs that doesn't usually switch bipolar people into mania. In my experience this is true, but it also made me feel stoned and caused rather blurry vision. Not good.

My questions are why did your doctor proscribe an AD for bipolar instead of a mood stabilizer...I'm assuming you're not on a mood stabilizer already.

And two weeks seems an awfully short time to assess that an AD isn't beneficial, though it's not to determine if it's a problem. Was he impatient or were you having problems with it?

N.B. I've read that Zoloft (and SSRIs generally) can cause a manic switch.

Hi Jay

I don't know why your doc put you on Wellbutrin but I wanted to let you know that my doc put me on the same thing about a week ago and the first few days I felt like killing myself or someone else.  Then all of a sudden I felt normal. My energy came back and I was able to move on.  Perhaps he/she thought it would help you with the depressed, low-energy mood part of Bipolar?  I'm not an expert, but I thought I'd share my experience with Wellbutrin.
Good luck!

Doctors have a guide for each disorder a medical path they follow. He probably was going by that but I'd ask him as he would know best.

Probably because they can't tell in advance which medicine will work for you (as they work individually for each person) and he wanted to try a different medication since the welbutrin wasn't working.
