Coping with Psychiatry

I have been waiting for an appointment to see a psychiatrist since having a short stay in hospital last October. I finally got an appointment for next month. I really want to get as much as possible from my time with the doctor but I am very worried that it will not be of any help as previous doctors haven't really been much use either. I feel they never listen to me. I really don't feel that much is ever fully explained to me and I want to know what they are going to do to help me. Could anyone suggest some questions I could put to the doctor which could help? From the treatment I have received thus far nothing has really worked. My moods have never been stabalised and I am getting very tired. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would put together a little note book and write out to yourself what has worked and what hasn't.  As you write the pros and cons think about the things that you want from your appointment and write that down too.  Bring a notebook with you and take it out during the session and ask all the questions you have listed so you can stay on track with what you want from the session.  Remember, this is about you, and going to an appointment like this isn't cheap and you need to make sure your needs are met.
