I have bipolar and had an 8 month stint of "bleeding to death"...my OB-GYN gave me a merina IUD and said if this doesnt work we would have to consider a hysterectomy...im 25 so this was NOT an option for me...I have had the IUD in place for 3 years now and because it is local...meaning it only effects your reproductive system...I havent gained any weight from it and have been competely period free 6 months after I got it, I would suggest this as it has worked wonderful for me...hope this helps:)
I have endometriosis as well as bipolar 2. About six months ago my doc put me on marina to stop my cycles. So far so good. I think I still have a bit of PMS but no other evidence of a period. Hope this helps
Is your OB-GYN aware of your bipolar disorder? Some meds will have contraindications for certain conditions, and it may be good to remind the OB-GYN of your mental illness. I'm on the Microgestin pill for its regular use of birth control and have had no issues with my bipolar disorder; if anything, things have gotten better. Your doctor should monitor you regardless of what you both decide and you should probably talk to your therapist to have bi-weekly sessions to deal in case things get bad. I would strongly suggest telling your doctor about your bipolar disorder and the noted negative effects the current measures have had on your mental wellness before the Mirena is placed. Yes, it can be removed, but if you're reacting to this, you probably would do better to have something that's more easily removed like the ring or another pill or something.
