If someone has pre-existing thyroid condition, could they take Lithium for Bipolar?

I have multi-nodular goiter but no other thyroid issues. My pdoc doesn't seem to mind and has suggested Lithium. Is Lithium a good choice?

My daughter has hypothyroidism (diagnosed at age 8) and dx with bipolar at age 17.  We were told not to take lithium because of its effect on the thyroid.  She currently takes lamictal with good results.
