What calms you down?

I had another mania episode today, god i was going nuts, manic as hell! I not been officialy diagnosed yet, just told i have anxiety (this was from physc 5+yrs ago.. I am waiting to see a new one here in my new country.

I was given valium a while back, and because i was so manic i needed to calm down, so i took some valium upto 10mg and nope, if anything my mind overpowered it as usual! And i felt a bit angry, and thought i was going to lose control :-(.. Thankfully i have a wonderfull partner.

Am not on any meds at all, they all send me manic.

Anyone else have probs with valium? Shame my gp can't prescribe anything stronger, we dont have xanax and klon etc here in the uk :-(

I understand how you feel and I am sorry you are going through this. Here is what helps me to slow down while manic:

* looking around the house and naming each object. You can even describe it as you have never seen it before. ( this slows down your mind)

* Count. Count things around the house, count the noises you hear or
count backwards from 100 by 3's

* Deep breathing- breathing in through the nose on the count of 5 and breathe out through the nose to the count of 7.

I have so more coping skills for anger if you are interested.

May meds especially SSRI's can make a person that has bipolar manic. However, I have been on Paxil for 2 years and it does not cause me to be manic.

There is hope!

Hang in there and keep your head up!

People with bipolar disorder can become manic from antidepressants and usually do, mainly if they have no mood stabilizer.  I think this is why a lot of people with bipolar disorder who are originally diagnosed with major depressive disorder get rediagnosed properly.

I get manic on some antidepressants for about a week.  I don't think the p-doc prescribe alot of valium for Bipolar, at least in Texas.  I have been prescribed Klonopin but I don't take it and a one time I had a 10yr drug habit and don't want to get addicted to anything...Klonopin is very addictive....I have enough problems already.

If you are Bipolar your p-doc should prescribe a mood stablizer for  you to control your mood swings.  When do you see your p-doC?
