Duration of need for prophylactic prescription

I have a friend now in her mid 40s whose bipolar illness started in her late teens.  Taking a series of one or more of  the typical prescriptions for bipolar disorder, she has been free of any psychotic relapse since she turned 30.  However, she has ongoing negative side effects.

After years of medicated control, what is the prognosis for bipolar?  Any information about the outcome of trial withdrawals?  Is it necessary for her to continue taking such prescriptions for the rest of her life?

You mentioned "ongoing negative side effects". What is going on with her?

There are many newer psychotropic agents on the market now that might help her, too, and decrease the side effects she might be having.
It's something she should discuss with her Dr. and they can determine what's best for her care.
It's wonderful that you care about her welfare that you posted here on her behalf.
I wish her well...

Yes!  She can never be without her meds or will go back into full blown manic depression.
