can aspirin treat schizophrenia ??

2nd time they speak of psychotic features and inflammation. The other day they said lithium reduces brain inflammation by activating omega-3. This time it's aspirin. here is the link

http://psychcentral.com/news/2010/06/16/can-aspirin-treat-schizophrenia/14621.html

so seemingly there is some kind of inflammatory element in BP or schizo...

Don't think that asprin itself would be used as an antipsychotic agent but they might further study the manner that asprin works from what it pointed out and develop further treatment modalities from there and potentially use them as adjunct agents to current antipsychotics or develop further compounds that might show efficacy as primary antipsychotics but this research is in its earliest stages. There are breakthrough treatment modalities as regards antipsychotics that are showing promise as primary (stand alone) antipsychotic agents (such as the NMDA receptor modulates, these are in multiple Phase II controlled studies around the world) and there are many more being studied as adjuncts (add on) antipsychotic agents that after research and development they may incorporate as further compounds of antipsychotics that would be developed. As for this particular research it sounds quite promising but as its in its early stages they can't specifically determine what controlled studies would lead to as to whether it would show efficacy in controlled studies and if it did whether what they researched would be used as adjuncts or actually show efficacy as primary antipsychotics.
It is always good to see new arenas of research though.

Yeah true, I just meant I would love to try it when it was approved or during the clinical trials or something and if it doesn't work then oh well it's just something like aspirin anyway.  I just got distracted and left that part out.

I would love to try this as my antipsychotic I take scares me that I'm going to develop TD and I don't like the fact it caused weight gain. Thanks for the article.  This would also help further the discovery of the link between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Not a silly question.

Scientific American recently suggested schizophrenia is linked to a specific viral infection that is essentially an inflammatory disease. In other words it has nothing to do with your toilet training.

It would appear logical that anything that calms down the immune system might relieve the psychiatric symptoms.

It might be interesting to try a prednisone challenge.

I don't know if there are any trials going on in this area..
