Insomnia, mania, and mixed episodes drove me crazy for years.  Seroquel was the drug that finally kicked the worst of it.  I had been on Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify, & Geodon, as well as Lamictal and Lithium and countless sleep drugs and sedatives.  Seroquel isn't perfect, but it is magic for me compared to all of the other drugs I've been on.  We're now adding in some Tegretol to see if it can make things even better.  My husband - also bipolar - takes Seroquel too.  He started on Abilify, had bad side effects, and was switched to Seroquel.  He loves it.  Good luck in your research and in finding the right cocktail.

I found Lamictal to be the most effective for mixed states but each person responds differently to each medication. Abilify was activating for me but other people I know found it to be of help. I don't know if your specific reaction was to Abilify or if you have had that reaction to other antipsychotics as well. It would be essential for you to discuss what other medications you have been on before and which you could not tolerate and which you responded to so your psychiatrist could have some ideas on what might be appropriate for you at this point within their judgment.
