high prolactin levels

Hello,

My recent blood test indicated high prolactin levels of 639.7 micro U/ml.  I am 23 years and have normal periods. Is this range  high to panic? Normal range (102-496) for non pregnant women. Gynecologist immediately asked to take Bromocryptin 0.25mg twice a week and Cabergolin 0.5mg twice a week. I took these medicines for 10days initial side effects were nausea. I went to another doctor who asked me to stop all medicines and undergo re-blood test. Yet another gynecologist suggested dose of medicines are very high and suggest to take 0.25mg of cabergoline  twice a day for 4 months. I also took normal brain MRI without contrast to rule of any tumors. But without contrast microadenomas will not be visible. My fear is all medicines like Cabergolin/Bromocryptin can damage heart - dopamine inducers. Kindly let me know what needs to be done? Should I visit endocronologist? Are my prolactine levels dangerous? Should I undergo re blood test to rule out any confusion? What is "polyethylene glycol precipitation prolactin test"? Are there any side effects if brain MRI is taken twice within a month? Any benefits of 3T MRI?  Without medicines any herbal/ayurvedic medicines/food supplements/vegetables-fruits which can bring down prolactin level naturally? Kindly advise.

Thanks

I don't know about that other test. That level seems high but keep in mind I am a patient like you.

Repeat tests should be done not really for error but just to see, as well as other pituitary hormones.

You should see a competent endocrinologist.

First, prolactin can be raised by many things other than a prolactinoma, like medications, thyroid etc. so you have to get someone to rule in and out all causes.

You will probably need a few blood tests and a scan and the scan should be done properly. You don't need an MRI that often. MRI should have been with and without contrast and dynamic method to best show any lesion.

As for the medication, like many, they are used for multiple disorders and usually the dosages that treat a prolactinoma are low and not in the range that are damaging (but some people like for any med can be more sensitive) so as a patient I would guess the risk the lower since dose is low side.

Sorry no OTC or herb will help. Best if you find a pituitary center so you are treated most appropriately. Large hospitals or university centers will have one.
