No, they don't turn into cancer !! They occur normally within breast tissue. It is when they are seen to be grouped in certain patterns or clusters that they are indicative of an underlying problem which often is cancer. They appear as tiny dots on the mammogram.

How are you? Calcifications are one of the findings that can be seen on your mammogram. These are very small bits of calcium can appear within the soft tissue of your breast. These aren't always a sign of breast cancer.

There are two kinds of calcification: macrocalcification and microcalcification. Macrocalcifications are bigger bits of calcium, and are not usually linked to breast cancer. On the other hand, microcalcifications are quite tiny bits of calcium, and may show up in clusters, or in patterns. These are associated with extra cell activity in breast tissue. The extra cell growth is not cancerous, but sometimes tight clusters of microcalcifications can indicate early breast cancer.

I hope this helps. Take care and regards.

I was told last year that I had calcifications after my mammo. They said not to worry about it and I didn't really know what calcifications was all about. After my mammo last month, I have breast cancer; and had surgery on May 30th. I would strongly recommend a biopspy of those calcifications for your piece of mind.
