Post Open Biopsy Complication

Three weeks ago I had an open biopsy on a lesion in my right breast.  The wound itself appears to be healing well and apart from some fading bruising and an expected lump at the site, all was well.  The biopsy was done on a 15mm area on the upper right hand side of the right breast about 5cm above and to the side of the nipple and was not malignant.  Over the last few days I have noticed what appears to be bruising appearing on the opposite side of the same breast.  It started as a relatively small area to the left of and below the nipple, but is now about the size of a large orange and and is heading upwards on my breast.  It had expanded its margin by about 1cm all round this morning on what it was yesterday.  I can't get in to see the surgeon or my GP for a few days, but am really worried. Any ideas as to what is going on?

I had 300ml  of blood and fluid drained today and it feels so much better.  My surgeon said it could happen again, but at least now i know what it is and what to do.

Hi there.

Two things come to my mind when things like this happens.  The first and most probable is that there can be an expanding hematoma in the surgery site, or areas of blood clots or blood collection.  There may be a blood vessel which is not adequately controlled during the operation.

Another possibility is that of infection.  However, given the progression of the situation, there should also be an accompanying pain, redness, inflammation and even fever if this were really an infection.

I recommend that you have this seen as soon as possible, by your doctor or an emergency facility, since hematomas can indeed progress.  First aid measures would include application of warm compress over the area.
