Please post your question in the future as an original post rather than as a comment to a previous post. This item was posted in May 2008 and we don't usually read comments. I recognized your name and read just out of curiousity. Now to answer you question ... the biopsy was recommended because of the 8mm finding in the right breast. Any abnormality that looks suspicious always calls for a biopsy so this is normal procedure. Nothing is left "unknown" and this is GOOD medical practice. Many suspicious areas are not masses but still need additional investigation. If you require an answer from one of the Cleveland Clinic Physicians you will have to post on the "Expert Forum". Regards ....

I met with the radiologist to review my cone compression and ultra sound. I have several small well defined fibroids and one area on my right breast above the nipple that had what was discribed to me as an echo or a shadow on the utra sound about 8mm.  The radiologist recommended an ultra sound guided biopsy.  I asked if he saw a mass and the answer was no. My question is why order the biopsy?  Im freaked out. is this normal procedure?

Hi there.

Cone compression is a technique where the area of the nipple with the surrounding breast tissue is compressed before taking an x-ray snapshot of the area during mammogram to visualize better the structures surrounding the nipple areola complex.  Structures can be better visualized especially if there are suspicious lesions.  Depending on the results of the cone compression, your doctor may request an ultrasound guided biopsy to ascertain the nature of the lesions.

Regards.
