confused

I had a needle biopsy for calcification. Dr. called and said it was nonmalignant and atypical ductal hyperplasia. Went to a surgeon who said it is not cancer and he needed to to do a biopsy to check surrounding tissure. I was fine with that until I got on the internet. I think they are checking to see if it is situ or invasive. Are they doing the biopsy because the calcification was in the duct or near? Are they also checking to see what phase I am in 1,2, 3, or 4. If the needle biopsy was nonmalignant then why this biopsy. I am feeling like it is cancer. I am getting ahead of myself and thinking about having both breasts removed if it is cancer. I am 45. Please respond. Hopeful and Scared.

Hi I just my biopsy results call from my Dr. and he told me that I too have ADH, and he recommeds that I see a breast Specilaist.  I luckily work for a Oncology and Hematology Group and was recommeded a Dr..  I asked my Dr, if I could choose one and he said yes, so I went with who was recommended by co-workers.  It has yet to hit me with what I need to go and do, but it will and I will be ready for this, and be strong.  I hope all is well with the both of you and I still dont know when my appt is but will come back and post.  Take care

Hi,
I am experiencing same.  Since the needle biopsy only picks up samples of tissue, they need to see the area adjacent.  In ADH it is the standard of care to do an excisional biopsy because in 20% of the cases, there is sometimes ductal cancer in situ (none invasive), or invasive cells in the adjacent tissue.  The studies indicate that some of the time some of the ADH cells may progress to DCIS, etc.  The odds are in our favor.  I am told that if all they find is ADH, depending on your personal risks and extent of ADH, more frequent clinical exams and mamms may be all that is needed.  Woman who have ADH may be at around 5 X more likely for higher risk of developing BC.  Some woman may take something like tomoxifen, which is said to reduce your risk by 50%.  They arent checking for any phase. ADH is not cancer.  Please try not to worry.  When is your biopsy.  Mine is 3/12.
