I agree with GL. It is generally very successful surgery. I am not sure of this but patient may need to wear a bag outside body to collect waste (ostomy bag). Have read and known people who had this. One wore until his colon healed...then had it taken out, and was back to normal functioning without it. The recovery takes time...physical and mental adjustment.
If you mean bowel, or colon cancer, they remove a section of the colon that has the cancer and sew it back together. My uncle had this surgery and it was successful.
