That thread has got to be the most beneficial thread of all times. I highly encourage EVERYONE to go check a doctor's advice.
All is true. Way before food companies existed; cats were surviving on just natural food. My cat is living proof that what these companies sell is not right. I have tried so many different brands, and all still upset his stomach. I tried a piece of steak yesterday and he ate it, which I find attractive because now it is only a matter of time before I switch him completely to a better nutrition.
We have managed to prolong our pet's lives but to what cost? So they suffer from UTI, kidney failure and all sorts of problems related to their diet, including diabetes? Heck dry foods don't clean a cat's teeth and are higher in carbohydrate (something the cat stores instead of using it) content than protein (a primary nutrient, along with fat a cat needs to eat daily). Dry foods are not convenient for them but for us, so we don't have to clean a messy box, that's all. Some cats even suffer from constipation just because of the lack of better nutrition. A diet high in carbs (dry foods) is not a cat's natural diet. Watch Animal Planet, go ahead, what do cats eat in the wild? MEAT...FRESH AND HOT RIGHT FROM THE SOURCE.....with little to no carbs.
I think we've all been brainwashed by labels and advertisement: Buy Purina and your cat will be happier, or buy Iams and your cat will grow stronger bones......etc etc blah blah. Iams tests ON animals, so by you buying what you believe to be superior nutrition you’re actually supporting something you wouldn’t do.
Why don't they say: You buy Purina (or any dry cat food, expensive or cheap) and your cat will eventually become obese, thus ending up being diabetic with heart problems? Excess carbs isn't even good for us!! What have we gained with all the processed sugars? More diabetic adolescents and frustrated parents....that's all.
The only positive thing I have to say about the pet food companies is that they DO add the proper nutrients-minerals, vitamins, and taurine to their food. Other than that, the so-called "meat" is no better than sprinkling vitamins and minerals on eggs that have been left out in the summer sun for a year. Have ya'll(sorry I'm from the south) read the ingredients? What do you honestly think that meat "by-product" is, or the word "meal"??? Think about this, the USDA has no say so in our cats food. To those of you who are unsure of what the USDA does, they inspect HUMAN meat and make sure it is fit for consumption. SOOOO, if they're not regulating our cat's food-what kind of "meat" do ya think they are getting??
I have had so many cats over the years-always more than two at a time, and most of them have died from cancer, kidney disease, and thyroid problems. I am completely convinced that the nasty, inferior food is to blame. Think about what the kidneys do, same as in people, they FILTER out the toxins from the blood. Toxins come from the food that is eaten and whatever is breathed in. Next time you're at your vets office ask them how common kidney disease and cancer is, and prepare to be shocked.
It has always baffeled me as to why pet food companies have made it so big to begin with. Whatever did we do without them?
Cats and dogs have been eating food for how long???
Time immemorial.
Did they survive without the pet food companies?
Heck yes.
Mine love the fresh boiled chicken with rice I make for them and it is actually cheaper than buying pet food. Sometimes when whole fish are on sale I will use that for a change.
It's a good thread. I actually asked a follow up in relation to the Doc's answer. We'll see if Savas has become outdated and needs an upgrade. :)
Thanks queen, I am interested. I'll check it out.
