Been a long time.

I sort of got busy and forgot about this forum until somebody happened to message me with a question recently. So by way of reintroduction, my name is Nancy and I work in animal welfare, currently with the Austin Humane Society in Texas.  I have 4 cats of my own (3 of them special needs and the other one semi-feral), as well as fostering special needs cats and kittens during kitten season.  I also work with 100s of cats (and dogs) at the Humane Society shelter.

Hi Nancy,

How wonderful it is to hear you too love the imperfect. I too have a special needs kitty and have worked with many in the past. I would have more but the one I have has had her teeth removed due to stomatitis and the herpes virus. So she would not be good for other cats to be around.

You must have a great deal of experience and knowledge that we would love to have you share with the rest of this forum. Please hang around, there are many that could use your help.

So Welcome to a the forum, you will meet some pretty amazing people and animals too!!!!

Sincerely,
CML

This is a pretty good article on feline herpes or Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis as it is more commonly called these days.  Most all cats have the virus and in some it can be activated by stress or other immune or inflammatory conditions (such as stomatitis).  There is certainly always a possibility of any cat developing a URI whether herpes positive or not.  So if we use that logic for restricting ourselves to only having one cat, nobody would be able to have more than one cat. :-)

Any type of feline virus is transmittable to other felines, but URI are usually fairly mild in adult cats and in a home environment are less likely to be transmitted to other felines in the home than say in a shelter or vets office.

Really??  Even my vet sees Meezy in the isolation room. I was always under the impression exposure to her when she is having a viral attack would jeopardize others!

I see you are an old friend to many here. Your expertise is a welcomed return in the New Year! I am sure I will learn much more from you, although I still rather worry about my Meezy with other cats---maybe I just know she is too used to being the "One Love" in my life to ever put up with playing second bannana,LOL?.....but I may be tempted . Now I just have to work on my husband.

Happy that you are back,
CML

Hi CML.  I too have a herpes + cat with stomatitus and no teeth, but my experience has been totally different.  He is the cat's cat, every other cat he has ever been in contact with loves him and he become the mentor to all the other cats.  We have come to call him Uncle Squeaky because he is the real kitten foster at our house.  I just feed and scoop, Uncle Squeaky does everything else :-)  None of my other cats or fosters have ever gotten URI or stomatitis from being exposed to him so I certainly wouldn't let that keep you from having other cats.

((((Opus & Jade))))))))  So glad to see that you are both still here!!!!!!

Welcome back to the sanity that is the Medhelp Cat Community.

Since you were last here,my wife and I have moved from northern Illinois to southern Maryland.  My girls Kestrel, Hildiekatt and Chesapeake have gone to the beautiful meadow at the foot of the rainbow.

The semi-famous Miss Teia has had some woes, but continues to be fabulous at sweet 16.

Missy T now has two brothers, Buff and Cooper, who we got from a rescue in Pennsylvania that is working to alleviate a horrendous hoarding situation.  Buff is a week away from 7 months old and Cooper is 2 weeks his elder.  The way they interact, they are litter-mates.
