Hi! :-) I'm an ex-vet tech. And I own six cats, all raised at home from bottle-baby size. I'm not rich either. Now, your vet will not tell you what i'm about to (he will want your kitten on some sort of special kitten food that of course only he sells and will cost you an arm and a leg). When my kittens were ready to come off the bottle, I fed them wet food mixed with formula. Gradually, I stopped adding the formula, and began to put peices of dry food in, adding more dry and less wet until my kitty was on dry food only. This method never caused my kittens problems. All six of my cats eat only dry food now, and all of them are healthy. BTW, I never used special foods. I always bought the cheap stuff. You will find that everyone has a different opinion about how animals should be fed. This is only my way. It does not mean it is the best, or the worst. It is just what I did. With this in mind, I am sure you can come to a best conclusion for feeding your kitty. Blessings - Blu
I too have read all the reports of dry vs. wet and my vet has even
changed her mind when 2 years ago she pooh poohed the idea
of not using all dry food.
I have done some research for my own kitties, one who itches like
mad when she is fed grain products, and keep a bowl of dry out
with hairball control, but their main food is the wet cans. You can
check on line for the brands that you are interested in, some are not
really that expensive.
Even if you could only afford 1 can a day, that will at least help their
little kidneys and might keep some feline kidney problems at bay..
Good luck in your search

apparently what you've read is correct...I've read the same from many sites. that even the worst wet food is better than the most expensive dry variety...
but that being said, it is still in the best interest of any cat that we try to find the least offensive of even the cheaper canned foods....apparently there are some varieties of fancy feast that aren't too bad, like the pate varieties or the classic....where the first ingredient is actually real meat and not meat by-product.
I will give you a good site to read...abt cat nutrition
