Cat Keeps Bringing in Animals

I have a tabby cat that is about 1 year old. My husband and I live with my parents, and brought the cat with us when we moved in. We have potty-trained her, and she uses a dog door that is installed to go in and out as she pleases. This is wonderful, because there is no stench of a litterbox...which i HATE. Only problem is, she keeps bringing in animals. She has brought in two live, baby bunnies, a HUGE toad, bugs, moles, rats, and then today a bird. It's breaking my heart. One bunny i took down to the veterinarian because it had a puncture wound and a broken leg, and they had to put it down. The other I was able to release. But today, she brought in that baby bird, and it was injured and couldn't fly. It was alive on our kitchen floor, and I put it back outside, but it died on the way out the door. I guess from stress... I'm an animal person, and I get really upset when this happens, so I guess my question is is there ANYWAY to keep her from doing this? a litterbox isn't an option, because, like i said, i live with my parents and my dad would never allow it. also, even blocking the dog door and just letting her out when she meows at the door isn't an option either. I've tried that, and my dad gets mad and unblocks it. (he has this weird phobia of cats pooping on the floor)...UGH what do i do? i love my cat, i can't get rid of her. but i can't stand to see her kill something else.

I found a live bunny randomly at the side of the road munching grass today haha...I wanted to take it home but my mum said no!?? How horrible is that?
yeah my cat is I really think having more kittens and I think her kitten is having kittens but I dont see how, she hasnt been out. And the 2 males in the house... 1 is her brother and the other one doesnt like her.
?? she is 6 months old AND she has had NO SIGNS of being in heat or anything... and her nipples aint changed she just got a hard round belly.? So might be more on the way.... as well as my zoo haha...

I feel bad putting collars on mine.. my mum has to do it, I am scared i do it toooo tight LOL.. But it should be fine... :) They might go skitz trying to get it off, but they will get used to it after a while! :)

Talk to your cat.  Tell her not to catch or kill life.  Don't think they don't understand.  They know what you're talking about and what you want them to do.

My older cat use to catch mouse and birds.  I told him "NO".  Everytime I let him out, I remind him not to catch mouse or birds.  Just meow, when he sees one.  It was a long long time haven't seen him catch any bird.

He caught 2 mice recently.  One showed the new little tabby girl cat.  Show her how to catch............... but this little lady scare like mad and want to find a place to hide.  Second one, he just wanted to show her again.  My husband asked him "let go".... he released.  Next day, I bought him a raw veal steak.  He is very good now.  Never catch any life home.

well we live in a suburb so im not too worried about it. she had to be declawed otherwise she couldn't stay...again, something my dad wanted. but then again i dont like getting scratched up either.

cassandrajane: lol your so cute...8 cats is a lot..idk if i could handle that many haha. how cute though; i miss when my cat was a baby baby. :( she was so cute and little. i still love her, but i dont like that she grew up. i feel bad to put a bell on her collar; she must love hunting as many things as she brings in. but i gotta save the bunnies lives. after all bunnies are my favorite animal. :)

I have 8 cats and the 4 well 3 that go out.. (One will only go out if I am in the garden and if I leave he cries)LOL... And 2 of them have collars with bells, They have NEVER brought home live animals... the one without the collar cause she loses it all the time (We buy her a new one every week) Has only ever brought home a bird or 2. But the otther day, I went to call her in cause she is only like 6 months old and I dont like her being out at night, was playing with a hedgehog. She didnt hurt it, She was curled up asleep with it.... LOL... But the bell really does work :)

That is pretty impressive for a cat with No claws Tbh.

But I really do Recommend a Bell Collar :)

The dad/litterbox/hunting issues aside, allowing a declawed cat to roam outside is pretty dangerous for the cat as well.  It sounds as though the area where you are living has a lot of wild life and will therefore attract other wild life such as feral cats, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, etc. who depend on hunting small prey such as rabbits, birds, and domestic cats to survive. Not having front claws gives her a major disadvantage should she encounter wild life that would fight back or hunt her.

The bell collar is an awesome idea!!!  Problem will be solved!  =)

Actually, those animals that your cat brings are a gift from your cat.  That's a very high compliment to you and shows you how much she loves you and how loyal she is!

And, WOW.......your cat is GOOD and must be super quick catching this animals w/ no front claws!!

thank you..trust me im not getting rid of her. i wouldn't send her to the pound..she was a stray and i adopted her from a veterinarian clinic after my dog died..shes here to stay...i just hate that she is bringing in animals. the bugs/toads i dont mind so much; its the birds and bunnies that upsets me.
idk if the bird was truly a baby...it was very small though and must have just started flying. she doesn't have front claws so i doubt she could get in a tree.
the bell on her collar is a great idea though. i'll have to get one with quite a big bell to warn the animals. poor kitty; she won't know why her hunting skills all of a sudden went bad. oh well.
the litter box and removing the dog door truly is a no-go since it's not my house...when we move out and get an apartment she'll surely have a litter box cause she can't run around an apartment community.
thanks again; great idea!! :)

Oh nature can be sad can't it, I'm afraid thats just the nature of the cat, to be a hunter and they love to bring home their catch, like feeding the ones they love dear.
If you were to use a litter box with baking soda in with the clay it really cuts the smell, and of course scoup out 2-3x a day. I do that and mine sits right off my kitchen, I have 2 cats and theres NO smell.
Another options is belling your cat....but if you do this please use a collar that has the 'escape' latch system so it will come loose if kitty should get tangled on something.....bells work wonders for a warning to other animals, not sure how this would solve the problem of him catching babies tho....he must be climbing the trees and getting in the nests??................
Otherwise hon, remove the cat door so he can't come in and out on his own, just let him go out when he asks to and they WILL ask to be let out when they need to.
good luck...please don't 'get rid' of a cat for doing what comes naturally, this isn't the cats fault, I'm sure you will find away to work it out.

i dont know when we move... it depends on our finances. we are paying off my student loans at the moment, and had to get a new car due to mine being 16 years old and about to break down... it could be awhile before we can get out. he'd have to get a raise; i'd have to have a job. which isn't an option right now because of ariana. UGH. that litterbox is okay with me, but my dad is another story. i can suggest it. i just dont know. when we move into an apartment i will have a litterbox on the porch, but until then idk..

The reason I ask is because if it is soon, I'd just suffer with the problem, but if it won't be happening for a long time, you might ask your dad how he feels about one of those really fancy litter boxes that costs like $160 that automatically scoops and seals the scooped stuff about ten minutes after the cat poops.  It kind of sounds like you wouldn't find this a good solution, but if you are in this living situation for the long term, it might be a possibility.

Since you have ruled out a litterbox and letting her out manually, and since it's your dad's house, it does sound like you have ruled out all the options.  When do you move?
