Cat Names, Nicknames & Unusual Habits

Good idea, Opus.  I was thinking we should start a new thread too.

If Jade is not happy with the food I present ie: hard instead of wet, she will turn, scratch the floor 3 or 4 times with her left paw as if she is burying it.  Like saying "pooh on that!"   Occasionally, she will do this at the end of her meal too.

Remember that colorful word that some people call their cats when they're being bratty?
My cat's previous owner used to call her "B***** Kitty" from time to time, too.  Tonight, that name fit her perfectly.  What's really funny is that she knows that one is meant to insult her!  She was practically screaming or scolding me for some unknown reason, like she was complaining, which is the nice meaning of the word.  I called her "B***** Kitty" and she knew what I was talking about.  She knows that it more or less means "shut up".  She had to have the last word, but she did stop acting like a "B***** Kitty"--for a minute anyway.

I was reading on the social forum how babies and cats "see" things on the ceiling and I thought I would put my comment here.

We had a beautiful calico kitty in the 80's that we adopted out of a shelter and she would sit on the back of our couch and stare up at the wall and vaulted ceiling of our apartment All The Time.   Just sit and stare.  It kinda freaked me out, I kept wondering what on earth she was staring at?  Maybe a ghost (which I considered) or angels :)  I would find myself getting into her position and stare up to where she seemed to be focused as it was always in the same place.  I never saw a thing lol.

When I'm laying in bed with my flame-point Siamese kitty either watching t.v. or working on my laptop, she always insists to lie or sit right in front of my face on my chest. I don't know if she's telling me to quit looking at t.v. or the computer but I will push her off or move her to the side and automatically she will move right back to that spot on my chest, blocking all view. No matter how many times I move her or try to explain to her that i can't see, she always goes right back.. She is so love-y. She follows me everywhere and meows very loudly when she hears the garage open until I get into the house. Always craving attention. This forum is soo cute. Kitties are so adorable and put people in the best mood. Very entertaining!

Better the girl do not wait for me for one of those things. Its ok for me but I'm not sure if would be healthy for a cat- you know, they are smaller than us ;-)

BTW, I knew a cat that did his things ON THE TOILET! I saw him doing it! (would be hard to believe,if not...)
And never fell inside - I remembered  that when read  SAVAS commenting about a poor "suicide" fella, almost suggest him try one of those "for kids seat" and trainne that!

That's funny, Opus, how Sami goes in and "scratches" when you're in there even if he doesn't actually have to go.

AppleBr...from what people are saying, It sounds like if you put a litter box for Loreena in the bathroom where you "go" maybe she will mimic and get the hang of it quickly :)  I am lucky if I see Jade have a BM outside.  I am always excited to see if it looks normal and if she has an easy time eliminating so I know if she is constipated or not.  I creep up slowly so I can watch...oh, the thrill of it all LOL

You are so right that non-cat people would think we're gross, even though this isn't any worse than having to use those plastic bags to pick up after a dog when they poop outside.  I was thinking maybe our cats do this because we're so closely bonded to these little creatures.

Jade59

Aww, the poor creature did do the smart thing!  That is so cool!  You're so right that the bath tub was a much better choice, since the bathtub is a lot easier to clean than just about any place else kitty could've chosen.  Nothing that a little of the usual tub cleaner can't handle.

And, non-cat people would have others think that cats weren't very smart.  Oh, yeah?  Have they ever spent any time observing these obviously highly intelligent creatures?  I think the dog v cat competition about which one is better or which one is more intelligent is pointless.  I think both animals are cool and they're both very intelligent.  They're just diferent, that's all.

Jade and our first kitty, Abby, both go/went outside to do their "business."  They both came to us as strays and already "went" outside.  We have a tiny house and I can't really imagine where I would put a litterbox.  I do have a story though about Abby...

My husband was out of town (he is up first to go to work and lets the cats out) so one morning, about 6am, I wake up to see if Abby is ready to go outside.  She is still sound asleep so I don't bother her and go back to bed.  I oversleep and it's 9am when I wake up.  Abby is awake now, but in a different place than she was at 6am and seems in no hurry at all to go outside.  This is odd.  Maybe an hour later, I am in the bathroom and I go to open the window above the tub and THERE I see why Abby was in no hurry to go outside earlier.  She had poo'd in the tub!  I had closed my bedroom door all the way by mistake when I went back to sleep and I see scratches on the door so she had been trying to get in the bedroom to tell me she needed to go outside.  I felt so terrible for that and for forcing her to go potty in the house, but I told her how proud I was that she had gone in the tub instead of on the rug somewhere.  I thought that was so cool, she figured out to go in the bathroom and in the tub.

OHHHHH I sure do have one that does the very same thing!!
my litter boxes have always been in the basement....but now with my son staying here awhile he uses the bedroom down there and likes to keep my darn 'rodents' out.
so I 've had to find a spot for their potty up here and the only place I found is in my ensuite....
and Sami especially will make a point and use 'his' while I use 'mine'...at first I thought it was just a coincidence because we were waking up at the same time...but NO its ALL the time!!.....funny thing is I think he goes in there and scratches when I'm sitting even when he doesn't need to use, he just thinks OK she says go so I'll give it a try....ha, ha too funny.
anyone other than 'cat people' would think of us a gross.

Well, at least you can "supervise" how things are going ;-)
I will have big troubles if some vet ask  me about!
Loreena is quite shy when it comes to this matter.Since she's an outdoor cat ,I never even notice when or where she used the toillet...
She's so careful in hidden the stuff that I never walked over some.Instead of my backyard, she prefers using the neighbourhood, and when I stop to watch her,she goes to a place where I cant see the stuff, just the meaning ful gestures.
I have to trainne her to use a litter box yet, have to do it while the building is being erect or the owner will have visits in the future ...

Does anyone else have a cat that comes into the bathroom while you're on your throne and the cat uses its litter box at the same time you're on your throne?  Akira just did this again.  There isn't anywhere else to put the litter box in this dinky apartment.  I just thought it was kind of peculiar and kind of humorous.  I guess when I go in the bathroom to take care of business, something tells the cat that she needs to do the same thing.  I know most peoples' cats come into the bathroom while they're sitting on the throne, but does anyone else have a cat that actually feels compelled to use the litter box at the same time you're on the throne taking care of your business?  I always feel like I should wait for the cat to finish what she is doing before I grab the paper, so I don't startle her, since the toilet paper holder is right above the cat when she is in the litter box.  I can't help but laugh at this situation.  It has happened enough times that I've discovered that my going compels the cat into going.

Oh I love these stories!
April maybe you're kitty thinks she is moving her babies around by the neck?

PrettyKitty, my Nemo does the same thing...for him its because of his long hair and not wiping after a poop..so theres always a chunk stuck there in the long hair and falls off anywhere in the house....lol, have found "cookies" in places you'd never imagine!

Had a cat that died 2 years ago a 'ragdoll' and her fetish was bows...we always had to have one from the xmas leftovers for her around...she would play and pack around with for hours, first xmas we had her she 'stole' them all off the xmas presents!!

Nemo its rubber or foam must be something in the smell off, he will dig or pick something out of anywhere, lilke my mouse pad or grandkids toys when they are here...he'll sniff it out of a box and drag it out and chew it to bits.

Sami its pipe cleaners!! found one a few yrs ago when grandkids were doing crafts and he plays with still, he'll bring one up on my bed at night and drop it on my tummy when he wants to play.

keep the stories coming girls they are all so darn cute

Well, Jade, to answer to your first question, the little one always manages to have a dirty butt (poop mixed with litter) I have yet to watch how he positions himself to do the task. Abby's butt is always clean...................now.

Abby...I named my cat Abby because I love that name. I had been looking for a cat for a while now. When I first saw him, his name was Chema. He's always looked like a female kitty to me. I still find it a bit difficult to believe he is male. He is big and fluffy, but his meow is so NOT high pitched but soft and delicate, it reminds me of my black, female kitty I owned when I was younger.

I am picturing kitty with socks in her mouth, April.  That is so cute!  Our first kitty, Abby, would run around like a crazy girl too.  One time, I'm in the kitchen doing dishes and Abby comes skidding into the kitchen, rights herself, takes off again and leaps up on our table that used to have heavy crystal candle holders on it.  I say USED to because they all came crashing down and shattered!  Jade gets wound up and leaps up on this same table, but I no longer keep anything on it that will shatter.  I learned LOL...

FurballsMom.....Jade does Not like to be brushed and when I try, she will take just 2 steps away and sit back down.  I creep up and get in a couple of swipes before she takes 2 more steps away...juuuust out of reach.  She knows when I'm serious though and will sit still once I put a little pressure on her with my left hand while I brush with my right.  Every once in a while, Jade will reach out with her paw, not often, but when she does, my heart melts :)

Janet......I am so glad you decided to keep Charlie.  He is sooo cute!  No kidding?  Charlie Tuna was your uncle?  How cool!

PK...LOL...Dillan always has poop sticking out?  Literally?  What do you mean LOL?

Now I have a question.  We seem to have a few cats named "Abby."  How did you decide on that name?  MY Abby was named after Maura Tierney's character, Abby, on ER. Just because I liked her character so much :)

Abby is called "Abba Dabba Do!"  LOL!!!

Roxy is called "Foxy Roxy."

Rusty is called "Chubalub" since he's so chubby.

Katie is called "Katiedid" since she's so tiny!  She's still the size of a young kitten and she's 15 months old now.

The new guy is Charlie and he has several nicknames!  One is "Charlie Tuna" after my uncle who used to be a DJ and went by the name "Charlie Tuna" on the air.  Another is "Charlie Chaplin" since he falls off things all the time and is so clutsy!  My brother is here visiting from PA and he's started calling him "LOC" for little orange cat.  LOL!!!

They all have their own little personalities!  Charlie has become the love bug in the house and cuddles with everyone but he has become MY cat!  I just adore him!  I adore them all though!

In addition to other nicknames I call my cat, I sometimes call her Beastie, because she is acting beastly.  Right now, though, she is just sitting in "her" chair with her blanket nest and is batting her eyes at me.

A lot of times I'll be walking nearby my cat and out reaches the paw.  She is trying to tell me to stay and pet her.  I can't help but laugh at this one.  You should see her when I go to brush her.  She wants me to brush her forever, so it's never enough.  If I start walking away from her while holding the brush, not only does she reach out with the paw, but if I'm wearing short pants, the Little Stinker nips me on the leg with her front teeth.  She obviously isn't trying to hurt me, since she never uses her fangs and is actually purring and meowing at me.  It's a little weird and can be quite annoying.  When I'm brushing her, she'll grab my hand that is brushing her and give me the same playful nips.  At the same time she looks like she is smiling, and she is purring and asking for more brush.  Apparently, she does this because the brush excites her.

Unusual habits, I've got one who pulls out socks out of our drawers and walks around the house with them in her mouth meowing this mournful meow, dropping socks all over the house. We're not sure why she does this. Just her quirkiness. :)

And the other cat has to knock over every blessed thing she can get her paws on. Since she joined our family 2 years ago as a rambunctious kitten we can no longer leave drinks out. I can't have a vase of flowers anymore. Nothing liquid. Yesterday I had just bought a clay pot to transplant one of my house plants and had put the bag on the table and went to find my husband to tell him I was home and in that split second she knocked the bag over and broke the pot. So I wasn't a happy camper yesterday!
Last Christmas she knocked over our Christmas tree. You heard right. She knocked the whole blessed thing over. We think she was trying to climb it. We heard a crash out in the living room around 2am and I dashed out there to see her crouched in shock and staring at the tree with big eyes. I couldn't believe my own eyes! Our 6 foot tree was lying on it's side with ornaments scattered everywhere. Some of them did break but fortunately most of our ornaments were sturdy enough. I wasn't too happy with her then either, all though I did have to laugh about it later. I wish I had a video camera always at the ready!
I wish I could have video taped her stalking a moth awhile back. That was kind of funny. She tried to take a flying leap and clasped her paws together to try to capture the moth midair and landed with a loud plop on my dining room table. I did have to laugh at that it was so funny!

She does try my patience, though, she really does!
