Sami's Dental:( 2014

hi everyone...sorry I've been MIA for a few days...not feeling the best with a full blown head cold plus many things to get done in the garden has had me swamped....

than yesterday May 29th despite a killer headache along with the headcold and torrential rain storm...I loaded up Sami and we headed to the city at 6 a.m. a 3.5 hr drive with a very talkative kitty.

the specialist looked at his mouth and thought the gums looked in great shape with the brushing and oral care and using a recently developed supplement called 1-TDC
(TetraDeconol Complex) which is basically esterfied fatty acids, we've been rubbing on his gums this past year and a half...he's such a good boy about it:)

than the Dr took him for bloodwork and anesthesia...did the radiographs and said the Lesions hadn't progressed since our last visit a year and a half ago..that is GREAT NEWS...he had just one loose tooth on top front that needed to be extracted the rest were doing just fine..so one extraction and a cleaning:)) momma was very happy to hear that.

Sami has a progressive disease called Resorptive Lesions or RL, this used to be referred to as FORLS...(felilne oral resorptive lesions)
with this very painful condition the tooth is actually being 'absorbed' by the bone...and the only way to diagnosis this is for a Vet to find it on radiographs during a dental. the affected tooth PLUS the entire root has to be removed by a dental surgeon.
its unfortunately becoming very common for some unknown reason in Cats...:(

this clinic is very unique, this oral specialist only comes there 3 days a month to do the difficult surgeries, he was formerly the head of a Veterinary teaching hospital, now he freelances in 2 Canadian provinces plus New York City..he is widely renown.
anyway what makes this clinic unique is the waiting room has a huge glass window so you can actually watch the surgeries going on...if you like you can even go into the surgery with your pet. I decided at both visits to watch from the window. Than I go into the OR as soon as the dr. is done and sit with Sami while he's regaining consciousness, I can stroke him and talk to him and this helps keep him calmer. After he's regained full consciousness and his temp is back up to normal they unhook the IV and we can go home!!!!

He got to sleep all the way home and mommy had to drive, boy were we exhausted when we got back...an 11 hour day of driving/sitting/waiting is hard on mommy...

but its done!! and his teeth/gums/roots got an A+ so the good Dr didn't think he'd have to recheck him for at least another 2 years!!!
