Feline leukemia

Dear Doctor,

My siamese cat has been restless and listless for a few weeks now and started having blood in stools for which we took her to the vet and they just told us that she maybe had eaten some soil and had stomach trouble.  Although it did reduce with the meds, she then developed fever and stopped eating and only has lots of water.  After one week of therapy with Tylenol suppositories and tolfedine and antibiotics, they tested her for FeLv and found her to be positive.  Now they told me that I need to put her to sleep and I also need to get my other two healthy cats checked for the virus.

Please let me know what is the best course of action?  It is killing me to think I would have to put my cat to sleep.

Thanks,
Lubna

My cat i used to have  had leukemia and  fiv   but   what dr told me before is to feed him raw liver and blend it in the  blender to help him  with his immune.  The vet  told me  before to put him to sleep and i would never do that   .I know it is hard  and alot to take care of  but  let him  or her   be there at home . Try the raw liver  and see how it works.
Your in my thoughts and prayers

Dont neglect the other two.
I'm sure their feeling the same pain as you are. My Luffy is still getting over his brother and sister passing. You will be able to move on and apodt another kitten.

I did.
And let me tell you, God sent me a small angel because Maple is just like the two i lost.

Like Dali told me once "Theres plenty of homeless kittens out there that need a secoond chance"

Let yourself heal, and think of good times of Young Jasmine. It'll be ok.

We're here for you.

My heart goes out to you. I know exactly how you are feeling. I lost my himalayan of only
2 1/2 yrs old to FIP. I didn't even know he had it.  On day he was fine and the next day
I noticed he was not eating as much or playing with th other cats. He was not responding to meds so they took an exray and found something that showed up in his abdomen. Thay did exlporitory surgery
because they thought that he may have swallowed something. They found tumors and
the biopsy came back FIP positive. I had to put him down 3 days after surgery.  I was crushed he was my baby and after almost 4 months I am still having a hard time with it.
I have two other himalayans a well. And I felt the same way. I know you are hurting but
so are your other cats. They are grieving as well. And they need your care and support
Find comfort in their love.

Hi, please do not neglect your other two babies, they are probably upset too and need their mom.  They can provide you comfort too.

Out of curiosity, of the three vet clinics, you can find a decent vet?  What's wrong with them and why are there only 3 clinics?  If the vetrinarians are anything like the moron that told you about the tylenol suppositories, than I'd be taking my animals on a long trip to try to find another vet.

By the way, I posted a question to the MedHelp ask a vet forum it was about acetominophen(tylenol) safety.  A REAL vet answered and here is the link to it.  Please read it.

I am very sorry for your loss, my heart goes out to you.  But, PLEASE, do me a favor-if you ever get another pet again, do not take it to the complete moron that told you to give your cat tylenol and said the illness was caused by eating dirt.  The vet is a total idiot, and you can tell the vet that zodiacqueen from america said so!!!

Im so sorry for your loss as I know exactly how it feels.

I had to put Jasmine to sleep yesterday.  She was suffering so much and deteriorated so fast, it was terrible.... Right now, I dont know what to do... Im so devastated.. Im not even able to hold my other two cats coz i can only think of my baby who died.... she had started twiching and frothing at the mouth and couldnt even move an inch and it was so heartbreaking to see.. so we decided to end her misery... it was such hell to take her to the vet when I could see so much trust in those pretty eyes...

I dont know if I will ever recover from this....

My darling penny gwen just died of felv.
Your vet had one fact wrong, it is NOT  a rare disease...FelV is the top killer of felines. FIP is the RARE disease. I'm very sorry to hear about kittys positive felv, It was very hard to watch my darling all her life knowing she had carried the disease. Hard enough knowing it was contagious and that my little luffy MAY have it (dear god dont let him) I'm sure this is a hard time for you both.

When my shanks died penny stopped eating and grooming. Stopped caring about herself and just stayed by my side. We took action and seperated her from my others. I took penny to the vet and he prescribed her with medicine, which i still have in the fridge. I gave her the medicine until i saw myself that hope was lost. She laid around and did nothing, it took all her energy just to try and purr when she got to my lap or when i piclked her up. Thats when i stopped. when i knew it was usuless....The day after i decided to stop her medicine she passed away in my arms.
Its painful and i know exactly what your going through. That cat was my world, my first and the very beating of my heart. I havnt cried yet...but it pains me to look at her collar at pictures at the room she passed in...its painful. If you need emotional support, i tell you know, Prettykitty savas mrs savas zodiacqueen and myself are ALWAYS here to help.

All i can advise for you is to hold your furry little child close and talk soft to her, let her know its ok to go. Let her know shes been so good and you love her very much. Even if you get her put to sleep...hold her and look into her little eyes. You want her to go in peace...knowing that she was loved and that she lived her small life to the fullest.

My deepest sympathys to you and your darling siamese. Give her a small kiss for us on the cat forums.

I'll pray for you.

Yes I had to give her Tylenol suppositories, they gave her Tylenol 100 twice daily.... I did ask them because I knew Tylenol was not good for cats... but they told me this dosage was fine for her...

But now, we have stopped giving her that as the vets have stopped all meds.

Thank you so much for all your help.... You really made it easier for me in many ways...to understand and assimilate the info.....

I did take her to another vet and another ( we have only 3 clinics here... Im in Abu-Dhabi, UAE) and all of them just kept saying its a very dangerous and rare disease and she needs to be put down immediately......

The first initail diagnosis of eating soil was without any tests whatsoever... i think they gave her something like gastrogel to sooth her stomach and thats it ....

Presently, she is not eating anything and im only force feeding her some soup and crushed food and once in few days the vets are giving her IV glucose .... thats it....

Now they have asked me to jsut stop all meds and let her be ... is that okay??

I dunno... my poor baby is suffering soo much im in tears most of the time.

Thank you for all your help and comments ,

Lubna

Are you sure that you gave your cat Tylenol suppositories?  I hope to god that you didn't.  The ingredient in Tylenol is acetominophen is highly poisonous to cats, even in tiny quantities.  I don't care if others on this forum agree with this or not.  This is a fact.  It will cause the kidneys to fail-I've personally live through this with my own cat.

By the way, I don't quite understand the "eating soil" diagnosis for the initial symptoms.  It seems to me there are several more likely theories - including dehydration, but there are others possiblilities that are not limited to a leukemia positive cat.  I'd be curious to know what kind of tests were done on that first visit.

Hi,

First of all, if you want to ask a doctor this question, you must go over to the expert forum.

But, from someone with a great deal of experience with cats, including those that have tested positive for this virus, a few ideas for your situation:

First of all, I really must say that you need to go to another vet.  I'm not sure about the medications you have received, especially the tylenol suppositories - there are dangers inherent in giving a cat tylenol.  And FeLv is not a death sentance.  Most positive cats live healthy and happy for a long time.  You need a vet that understands this.  There may be symptoms that need treating, but very, very rarely does it require putting a cat down.

Also, it is not as contagious as most people believe.  Unless your cats are fighting violently, there isn't a high chance of contagion.  It is not an airborne virus, it spreads through saliva and blood.  So, without sexual contact, fighting that brings blood - that kind of thing - you are probably ok.  I won't say there isn't some risk, but it's not a big risk.

If you haven't already, I'd discontinue the tylenol and then I'd get her to another vet, ASAP.  If there is one in your area, I'd recommend a good sized animal hospital.  Those kinds of places have multiple experts on staff and they see a lot of different cases.  They should be able to give you good treatment, advice and information.

Meanwhile, make sure she gets sufficient hydration (water) as dehydration can lead to conditions that can cause bloody stool, among other things.  And dehydration will exacerbate most other conditions, as well, so it's important to make sure she gets enough warer.  And that she is eating.  Let me know if she isn't eating and drinking and I'll see if I can give you some advice that will help.  But most of all, if she isn't eating and drinking, then it's really that much more reason to get her to another vet, fast.

I'm sorry that vet frightened you like that, but see what you can find out now.  It may well be good news.

Let me know if there are any other questions or concerns that I might be able to answer.  I hope everything works out for you and your babies.
