Yes, the meds were very cheap.  Human med, it was.  I think it was something like $12 for a month supply.  The more expensive procedure was the fine needle biopsy of the lump between Jade's eyes.  Thankfully, that showed exactly what we were dealing with and the tests stopped there.  I'm sorry you had to pay so much before you got your diagnosis.  It can get very expensive owning a cat, that's for sure.

I'm curious.  How long did your vet tell you to medicate?  Crypto being a fungal infection, we medicated an extra month to be on the safe side.

Thank you and I appreciate your reply. .   I've already spent over $1,500 in x-rays and blood tests, two of them.  Then the meds were quite cheap.  I wish the vet who says he is experienced would have given me the prescription without my having to spend so much.
I will keep my hygiene good.
Thanks again.  M

HI Marlene and welcome to the forum.  My cat Jade came to us with cryptocococcosis.  Her condition was not immediately known for several months and when we finally had her tested, had to medicate her twice a day for 4months so we were in constant contact with her for almost a year and we never got it.

Of course, you want to practice good hygiene and wash your hands each time you come in contact with the cat.  To be on the safe side, I would follow scaredlonelady's advice and call the vet.  Or google your question.

p.s.  This *might* be an issue if you have a lung condition.

You can get it but it is rare. I would call a vets office and ask to speak to someone. They will know since they work around animals that may be sick and have that and they need to know how to protect themselves. I had cats all my life and I never got anything. I even had cats who had symptoms of cryptocococcosis. Leave your cats in door and they will not get it....in door cats are safe. Don't let your pet be around bird poop outside.
cryptocococcosis is a fungus so if you or your pet do get it...fungus is treated with meds and goes away.
