Reaction to Frontline Topspot

Gave my cat frontline topspot yesterday for the third treatment of fleas.  Have not noticed any fleas on him now, but wanted to be sure and vet recommended three doses, one each month 4 weeks apart. Gave it to him yesterday afternoon.  He has been sick today, throwing up and lethargic.  He is eating though.  He usually is very outgoing.  Could it be the frontline topspot or has he come down with something.  He is not coughing or sneezing.  If it is a reaction to the topspot, what should I do?

Hi,

When we first gave our kitty the "Frontline" it made her sick too.  From my understanding, the Frontline is helpful with ticks and since we don't have to worry about that where we live, we went with the "Advantage" instead and put only HALF the tube on her just to be safe.  It seems to work fine even though we don't use the full dose.

I would imagine, if your kitty isn't better within the next 24hrs, maybe get him checked out.  Our cat, Jade, was ill for, oh I would say, 48hrs and wouldn't eat unless I brought her food to her.  After a couple of days, she was just fine.  It's good your kitty is eating.  My opinion would be to wait and see how he is tomorrow.  Try not to panic.

You have come to a wonderful forum.  There are many knowledgable people on here who may have another idea for you.

Best of luck and let us know how your kitty is tomorrow if possible : )

You are a very smart owner to be looking for side effects from Frontline.  Some cats do have side effects/reactions to treatments and drugs-just like us!!  Whatever gets put on their skin gets absorbed into their bodies.  It pays to be cautious!

I wouldn't be overly concerned yet.  I would give it another 24 hours and maybe the symptoms will subside.  Maybe your baby just has a simple hairball and that's upset your cat's stomach.  You could try some vaseline on the paw or some other hairball remedy and see if that helps.  It's great that your cat is still eating-that's why I think it's safe to wait.

Thanks for your comment.

Garrett is fine today.  I was so worried, but he is himself today.    Great to have Garrett feeling well again and meowing up a storm like usual.  He is such a loud, lovable, affectionate big tom cat.

Thank you also for your comment.  Maybe it was a hairball afterall.  Thanks again.
