Scratching issues

Reese is 10 mos old. He's been my baby for 6 mos. Before he ever came home I bought him LOTS of toys, including scrating posts....he has never use any of them...ever. He has my furniture soooo torn up, I almost in tears. Yesterday I bought him a cat tree....he climbs on it, naps on it, sits and looks out the window, rubs on it and even bites it......he has not scratched on it.

I don't know what to do!!! I spry him with water and he does run off but, next time, it's on furniture again!
What do I do? Some of his nails are so long cause he is not scratching enough cause he gets in trouble (sprayed) for doing so on furniture but I dont know how to get him to use HIS furniture!! Please help!!  (Yes, I have sprayed his furniture with catnip.)

Hi,

These behaviors must be taught to Reese. When you catch him scratching the furniture, pick him up and take him over to his scratching post, put him down, get down with him and then you scratch the post. There is no point scolding him, cats don't learn through negative reinforcement, so when he sees you scratching the post, he'll copy you, then you must praise him!
This is how he will learn what he is supposed to do.
Hope this helps! Peace! x
