mysterious illness w/ fuo

7y.o. cat comes in late afternoon goes straight to bed, next a..m does not come to greet us as we wake up.
Very lethargic.look on face apparent doesn't feel good. Stand him up he lays right back down. All day no,food or drink..slept all day & night again. To vets on 2nd.day ,no fever, negative physical except for slight gingivitis with  a tad of blood on gums. Blood work all ok,including neg. liver and kidney function. Placed on antibiotic and sent home.Next day exactly same, back to vet  and now has fever and dehydrated .kept in hospital 3 nights .Subcu fluids given and no response to antibiotic and fever cont'd so strongest antibiotic started and x-rayed..with negative results. Fever responds to the stronger antibiotic; slightly more alert and walks a bit. No oral intake yet except for one sip water.Only other noticeable action we noted was thruout was trying to swallow similar to when one has sore throat i.e. lift head  and neck a bit... there is no foreign object or redness in throat. After 2nd day of stronger antibiotic he is growing stronger rapidly now and beginning to take bites of food. Can jump up on couch and chair with us.. There was no real DX and I can understand..but what was it?? Could slight gingivitis  cause a sudden illness like this?

Hi Joeln,

Well you have done all the right things to bring your guy back to health. Working with your vet and keeping him informed is always your first line of defense.

There is a condition called Stomatitis. It is an immune mediated disease that affects the mouth, gums, and roots. This is a severely painful and debilitating condition. It usually will need all teeth and their roots to be extracted. I know--sounds extreme....but my cat had this and could not eat, groom, play, swallow--did not even want water it was so painful. The gum infection can spread to the sinuses also.

Anyway check back with your vet and see if perhaps this is the beginning of this condition. I say this because when my Meezy had a full blown outbreak of this her lymph nodes on either side of her neck were very swollen--making it difficult for her to swallow.

Sure hope it is not Stomatitis. It is difficult to control if the teeth are not removed. Steroids are usually given, but steroids have many very bad side effects and hurt the body in other ways.

Please keep us posted.
