I'm going to echo the above.
Also, an observation from Catamount Grange (my house's name)...
Miss Teia (11 7/12ths years old, famous in other threads) occasionally will pee on top of the spare bed (after the first time, we thoroughly treated the mattress with an enzyme "de-urinator" product, the one that comes with a black light, and replaced the cover with a waterproof one).
From trying to think it through, we found that there was some disruption in her daily routine that upset her, which was related to the lapse in box habits. Like your kitty, wet outside the box, solid waste in...her "puddles" didn't look or smell odious, just normal cat pee.
The first time, it seemed related to me having been gone for a week, when I took a sudden trip in early December to visit my dad, who was ill with cancer at the time, and left her alone with my wife and the other three kitties. Teia is "daddy's girl."
The second to our youngest cat bullying up to her.
The third to said youngest using Miss Teia's box.
3 times in 8 months, which we can rationalize as behavioral, rather than illness related...and the puddles are big. I swear, Teia must have a human-child size bladder.
I agree with all of the above. The cat may be in pain from a bladder infection. Please take him in as soon as you can.
I would get your kitty checked for a urinary tract infection. And, I would clean the litter box at least once a day, if not twice. Cats are very picky, and will not go in a dirty box. I bet these solutions will get kitty back on track!
first of all welcome to our cat community I hope we can be of some help and that you will continue to post often...(just hopefully not with problems everytime)
You said the litter box was cleaned 2x in the past 2 weeks, did you mean a total clean out besides the daily scooping?
did you use a strong cleanser?
I would really suggest that you have him to a Vet and get a urinalysis done, a male cat esp. at 10 yrs of age is very likely to have a UTI, this is so common with the males....and if their urine isn't the right PH they start producing crystals and its darn 'painful' when they pass urine...also their urethra can become blocked and be a medical emergency.
the majority of the time when kitties start changing their habits its because they are trying to tell us something and thats the only way they can.
in your kitties case I think he is having pain and needs to see a Vet asap.
another question.........do you by any chance have him on a dry food?..because this will be a huge contributor to urinary tract problems, cats really need to be on a can food diet.
please post again and let us know ok.
