Beau has blood in his stool

A couple days ago I saw something on the carpet in my bedroom about the size of a bean, flicked it with my finger, and it stuck.  It was a small glob of poo with mucous & blood.  I called a vet (Cat Doctor) & took him in yesterday.  The vet was great, thorough, caring.  I took in a stool sample.

On the drive home, he started yowling, I smelled some urine, more yowling, more urine.  Poor guy!  It was quite a drive & there was nothing I could do until we got home!  Then he ran upstairs, pooped in his box, didn't cover it, & there was blood in it.

I got a call this morning; he has giardia, and I'll need to give him medicine for 7 days once I go pick up his prescription from them.  I need to find out how much clean-up I'll need to do here at home to keep him from ingesting the darn giardia cysts that live for months.  I'll clean his water fountain with a bleach solution, buy a new filter for it, clean his litter box as thoroughly (maybe buy a new one?), and figure out if he could have tracked any out into the carpet.

My main worry is that after that trauma, Friday morning I'm taking him to the Kitty Sitter where he'll be boarded for a week while I'm on a trip to Las Vegas with my roommate.  The Kitty Sitter will be great with him & will make sure he gets his medication & loving attention and a nice big bedroom for himself, but still I worry and feel like a bad mommy for leaving him now.

I cleaned his carrier totally; I think I'll go buy some Feliway spray for the carrier before the trip to the Kitty Sitter's.  I guess I'd better get moving!

If anyone has any good advice about dealing with a giardia issue, please share!

The trip here to Vegas. Sorry, posting from my smart phone doesn't always go smoothly.

Beau has a nice big room with a full size bed (he has his own blankies) and a great window for watching birds, squirrels, & people.  The Sitter has a big beautiful home.  She has the bedroom doors open with a lattice so the kitties can't get out.  Two of her kitties greet the guests through there lattice doorways.  I think Beau'll have a fine time there.

Tonight I went to the M Casino for dinner in a sports bar/deli.  I put $20 in a Wizard of Oz game, had lots of fun, and cashed out with $89.40!  I had been thinking about quitting, won this amazing bonus, then cashed out.  Fun fun!  That paid for more than three days of Beau bed & breakfast vacation, lol!

Hi Apple, nice to hear from you. I hope you and your kitties are doing well.

My roommate bought a new water fountain & several other things for Beau, then we spent hours cleaning and packing for the trip

I did call the Kitty Sitter & asked if she was OK with having a kitty with giardia in her home, and she has no problem with that, or giving him his meds.  She's even going to let us bring him in this afternoon instead of tomorrow morning. That will make the cleaning and packing easier!

I'm going to enjoy the desert!

Spirit, I've only visited NM once, but loved it totally. Vegas is great when you get out into the desert & canyons, even if the Strip & all has it's

Just a thought- Have you checked with the cat sitter to make sure she is ok with him having the parasite?  I know kennels are very particular on what they can have.

Thank you both!

I picked up Beau's medicine, bought the Feliway Spray & new filters for his water fountain, then went and got my hair cut. I had physical therapy before that, and ended up with a dark chocolate Snickers bar for lunch.

After my early dinner, I opened a small can of Wellness food, wrapped his two pills in chicken pill pockets, and hoped for the best.  He licked the pill pockets, but didn't want them in his mouth.  I managed to get him to swallow the first one without too much trouble, but the second one he tried very hard to avoid. It took a few tries before I got it far enough in his mouth to hold it shut and pet his throat and he swallowed, though he meowed.

He was happy with the canned food and ate quite a bit, washed his face, then ate some more.  He's not too happy with me, but I give him gentle pets when he gets close, tell him I love him.

Tomorrow I'll take apart his water fountain, wash then rinse in bleach solution, then run though dishwasher (one of the selling points of the drinkwell platinum) all but the motor & cord.  After my Avonex is delivered, I'll go to the store and buy replacement litter boxes.  I'll clean the areas around his litter boxes, use bleach solution when he's not around, preparing as much as possible for when we come home.  We're picking him up on the way home from the airport, so it's a little tricky.

I'll vaccuum, wash his blankets, and hope its all enough.  I'll take him back in for a re-check in a few weeks, and see if he needs more or different medicine.

By the way, Beau now weighs 13.63 pounds, so the darn parasites didn't cause any weight loss!  He wasn't much over 11 pounds when I adopted him 6 months ago. He's long and sturdy, but the vet said that he shouldn't gain any more weight, he's starting to lose is "waist", ha ha. She agreed that he may indeed have some Bengal in him.  I can hardly wait for him to feel better and be even more energetic, oh my!  :o)

I'll relax and enjoy my time in Vegas.  I have a video of Beau kneading his blanket on the bed right next to me that I can watch, as well as a few hundred pictures, all on my phone.  We'll be fine.

I echo Opus' words - you are a fantastic mom!  So sorry to hear this, K.  Sorry for Beau and the hassle giardia brings. I'm sure that was frightening to see that blood.  I know I would panic.  If affordable, I think I'd buy a brand new litter box and save yourself the work as well as give yourself peace of mind, you didn't "miss a spot."

I also think he'll be fine with the Sitter.  You can always call and check in.  Have a wonderful time in Vegas!
