A Cine MRI is used to assess the quality of CSF flow around the brain.
In my opinion, a Cine MRI is not needed for a diagnosis, but rather it is used to evaluate at what stage of symptoms you are at. IF you have symptoms and "satisfactory flow", then you may have more time to decide whether or not to have surgery. IF there is unsatisfactory flow, then surgery would be more crucial.
A Cine MRI would also be helpful in determining what is causing the CSF to not flow well. It can show whether there are problems anteriorly or posteriorly.
Now, if there is suspected Chiari Zero, then a Cine MRI will help to CONFIRM the diagnosis. But, again, this is not soley what the diagnosis would be based on. Your symptoms, a complete neurological exam, and MRI views of the brain would all be necessary in diagnosing Chiari Zero or Chiari I.
Clear as mud?? (:
HTH!
