Also I would like to say r/t my choking. It was happening some time ago at night and I was waking up almost nightly gasping. My MD said prob sleep apnea but left it at that. However since my masectomy, chemo and radiation I hadnt experienced but a few times at night. Lately though it is the same thing but Im awake. I do choke ALOT on food but also just for no reason or if I exert myself. i am returning to work soon after time off r/t to my breast cancer and am very worried. I have all these new sx and worsening of others. Im also having almost daily nausea and now vomitting a few times a week.....not sure I can do it...
Thank you all for your feedback. I was just told today that my NL referral was declined but was recommended I see a NS, but from what I have read this is a good thing. Mabe he/she will order the CINE MRI but I will def. bring it up. i hope it is someone familiar with the condition and will not brush me off as I feel my MD is doing......thank you again and the best to you all...
Hi...chocking is something I dealt with...for a long time I thought it was from PND...but later found I was gaging on my own saliva too....I also had issues taking pills...hypersensitive gag reflex, then went to non existent....
My issues were all on my left, so it dose depend where the issues r going on in u as to where u will be the most affected...we all can have completely diff symptoms with this same condition....
With the brain stem compromised, it is no wonder u have hot flashes...but a syrinx can also be the culprit as it can be against a nerve that is causing u to feel overly warm.

I don't have chocking problems per se, but I do have a lot of issues with stuff getting stuck in the back of my throat like pills and such. I don't have a gag reflex anymore which is why I don't choke I guess.
I had a CINE MRI and all it consisted of was a pulse ox monitor being put on my index finger while the MRI ran. it was that simple, but I have heard of other ways of doing it such as with contrast being added and all.
As far as rather onesided symptoms are related to Chiari. Most of my symptoms are left sided, but my doctor doesn't seem to think it's relevant.....hmmm...I beg to differ
CINE stands for cinema because it is viewed like a movie. The impression I got from the MRI tech and the doctors is that a CINE describes how the films are viewed and a CSF flow study describes the kind of study they are doing. So if it doesn't say CINE or CSF flow study on the referral they haven't ordered it. Also you'll know if they're doing it cause they will put some kind of heart monitor on you while they're doing the MRI.
Hello,
Swallowing issues are a big problem for alot of us. It comes from pressure on the vagus nerve at the brainstem. It what I was told. I am assuming this gasping and choking is when you are trying to eat? If it is happening while you are sleeping (waking up that way) then it could be sleep apnea and you need to get that checked soon.
My issues are more on the left as my brainstem is pushed to the right. So I think that is how it works. Not exactly sure about that but that is my experience.
Cine basically means cinema because it is like a movie of your spinal fluid while your brain/heart go thru systole and what happens to that area under the pressure of the fluid being squeezed down the spinal cord. To see if there is a blockage of CSF fluid at the Chiari.
So a cervical MRI is to check for a syrinx and possibly other issues. Most doctors believe they only occur in the cspine..but they can occur in lumbar and thoracic as well. So I would ask for a cine and the entire spine to be scanned as well.
Hope this helps.
