Hi sleep apnea is something many with Chiari do have...so, if u snore, or wake gasping for air and have sleep disturbances ur Dr may want to rule this out,
The first test is to test the oxygenation of ur blood it is a BP like finger clip u wear while sleeping...if this number is off then they may suggest the sleep study. There is a way u can have this done in home which is more comfortable.....check NovaSom.....
yes I has a sleep study and showed primary sleep apnea evidently its a sign of brainstem compression according to Dr. rosner.. and I have taken sleep med for years for serveve insomnia. hopefully this will inprove after surgery.
i have a chiari malformation and had a sleep study done. Apparently chiari malfromations can sometimes press on the brain stem causing some people to stop breathing whenever they sleep (central sleep apnea), this is sometimes a good indication for surgeons as to whether or not a person might need decompression surgery.
While shortness of breath is a symptom suffered by some, a sleep study is done generally for patients who suffer from a condition known as sleep apnea. During sleep apnea you have periods of no breathing which eventually wake you with a gasp for air. It is treated by wearing Bipap oxygen at bed time. Lastly, your Dr should be able to determine if this test is necessary for you :-) Good luck. Lisa
