sore throat - constant urge to "swallow" nothing!

I am in the process of getting an MRI of my spine - the referral process is a joke (: but in the mean time ... since yesterday I've had a really sore throat - it worries me because I'm one to mainly breathe through my mouth and I'm having to almost breath ... manually? if that makes any sense.  forcing myself to breathe through my nose.

should I be so concerned? or am I over thinking a sore throat? has anyone else experienced anything like this? my herniation is 8 and 11mm.  if breathing doesn't get easier should I go to the ER?

Hi...well the mixed signals from the nerves can cause many issues, but chiarians can get swollen lymph nodes..... and post nasal drip both of which can cause a sore throat.

I am not saying that is what caused urs, but is an explanation.

I'm not sure if it is that you are having trouble breathing, or just having trouble with making yourself breathe differently b/c of the pain in your throat. I am the opposite I have to make myself breath through my mouth when my nose is plugged and it feels awkward. I do get a weird feeling once in awhile that I have to force air through my nose when there is no reason for it (not blocked up).  I also get what denverluv experiences too. If it is an actual breathing issue, definitely go to the ER!!

Your brainstem is what controls your respiration and heartrate and from what I remember from your other post, your MRI mentioned that your medulla was compressed? The medulla is what monitors those things. So, if you are getting concerned a call to the NS wouldn't hurt either.

I would get sore throats all the time b4 surgery and I am pretty sure that it is to do with Chiari...

Take care

Get it checked out for sure but, I go through these things where I can't take a deep breath, like I can't expand my lungs. Then I get freaked out, and it's even harder to breath LOL. I have learned calming down, and trying to take a deep breath through my nose. It eventually works. I also get chest pain. I have had three EKG and my heart is ok. I have also had a chest X-ray and my lungs are clear. SO, I can only attribute it to my Chiari and syrinx. But, Chiari and syrinx can cause respiratory and cardiac problems, so def. get it checked out if it is scaring you.

I agree. If you just have a "sore throat" then I wouldn't rush off to the ER. But if you are also having trouble breathing I would get it checked out.

Any breathing issues need to be addressed, it may be nothing BUT I would get it checked out ASAP.
