So odd to be reading this as I had my decompression on 22.09 and started waking up with severe headaches on 03.11 - they aren't the same as the usual ones. Do you have any sharp shooting pains with this type? Like the pattern of the pain changes.
I'm back in hospital now and see NS again tomorrow, I have been meaning I ask about this - I will post tomorrow with what I learn.
I have a new CM1 diagnosis with a very long syrinx that I've known about for a few years.
I have not had a decompression surgery and I too wake up with headaches that don't always go away as I get moving. Are these headaches more in the back of your head and your forehead? And do they intensify with head movement ESPECIALLY bending over, feeling like your head is going to explode?
The doctor I see who specializes in CM is trying me on Diamox, a medication used to treat pseudo tumor cerebri (increased intracranial pressure.) Along with sleeping with my head at almost a 90 degree angle I have been waking up headache free almost every morning.
Talk to your NL, decompression surgery is not always a permanent or 100% cure. You may be developing increased pressure in your brain That can cause damage. Watch your vision especially! Also ringing in your ears, tingling feelings in your scalp or strange eye movements can be a sign.
Thank you very much. I'll be sure to do that. My eyes hurt but no vision change.
Hi....as The_beat mentioned it is possible to be ICP....and some meds may help...so talk with your Dr, surgery is always a last option...
Deff talk with your Dr and let us know what you find out.
I think the most damaging thing that can happen IF it is elevated pressure in your skull -- is make your optic discs swell / papilledema. Are you having any vision changes? even if you aren't, if it continues every morning, it wouldn't hurt to mention it to your neurologist and possibly have an eye exam. Any ophthalmologist can check for papilledema but I'd recommend a neuro-ophthalmologist, if you could find one.
Can this resolve itself or should I be calling NL?
Hi ... after my decompression surgery I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and fit with an LP shunt. One of my first symptoms was headaches upon waking -- these are the opposite of "low pressure" headaches, that tend to get better when you lay down. I'm having my shunt settings changed again Friday because I'm waking up with headaches again. But it can definitely be a sign of elevated pressure.
