My soon to be 4 year old son has trouble using toilet for urination at home.
He's been in the underwear since he was 2.5. He uses the bathroom for the bowl movements, and is completely clean and dry outside of home. He is still soaked and in pull ups at night. We just spent 4 days away and he didn't have a single accident. We arrived home and he had three wet pants in one afternoon.
The reason he is careful about it when we are out of the house is because he know we have limited amount of clean clothes and he will tell us when he needs to go. At home, he will just wet his pants (leak out small amounts) and go about his business until we tell to go get changed. He knows to tell us if we ask him if he had an accident and he'll go and get changed. He will sometimes have accidents 20-30 minutes after he went to the bathroom.
We tired going with the flow. We tried preaching, We tried having him in pull-ups but then he has no clue if he is wet or not. It didn't help him. We tried the rewards but they are not enough of the motivation. We tried timer and that worked well. He was happy that he was successful, but really didn't teach him that he needs to take control over it. If we ask him or tell him to go, he objects.
He did have a puddle on the floor phase and it was very obvious to me that it was behavioral. I had a stern talk to him about it and he never did it again.
But this is different. I don't know if it is physical or behavioral and how to go about it. Please help.
Thank you,
Sandra
