link between colic and preschool eating disorder/behaviour

My little boy is now 4 years old.  He has a history of colic which lasted over 12 months.  He always seems to be ill, either chest infection, asthma, vomiting, cold symptoms.  His appetite has always been poor, perhaps has one good meal in about 4 days.  He can eat when very hungry but always full after 2 chips or 3 spoons of potatoes.  His behaviour and concentration levels are awful.  He has become a very angry and aggresive little boy.  He now hits his friends and is nasty and disrespectful to everyone.

He was 6 weeks premature and always looks pale and ill.

People say that he dosnt look under nourished.  He has broad shoulders so in his clothes he looks ok, however he has no weight on him - you can count his ribs he is only wearing age 2 trousers as he has small legs and no waist.

Meal times are terrible - throws food or simply refuses to eat and when he says he is not hungry and dosnt want anything he really means it an there is no way he will change his mind.  He does have a sweat tooth and will only eat sweets and chocolate.  Obviously these have been withdrawn or are limited.

could any of this be connected?

Hiya

Just an update - after posting the origional question i went to see my sons GP and basically said this is whats happening - could we be missing something?.  I would like further investigation for my son.

Well your instinct was that he could be suffering from GERD.  I looked further in to this and suspected that this could be the issue.

We were referred to a paediatrician who we saw on wednesday and hey ho he diagnosed GORD or GERD.

Although at present we are not that much further forward he is writting to my sons GP for possible antacids and is referring us to a dietician.  So thank you very much for your thoughts.  Although we are not yet cured we now have a starting point.

Thank you very very much.

Thank you so much for your comments.  It has been a feeling of mine that most of my little boys problems are related to his gut.  I actually thought about it being reflux - however, even though he had severe colic symptoms as a baby he was never a sickly baby as in after feeds.  Just symptoms of severe screeming, crying and pulling his knees up for hours.  He also seemed to have a lot of wind.  Still does.

Whenever he is ill even with his asthma he complains of feeling sick and once he has been sick he improves.  Usually this follows coughing bouts.

Could it still be a gut issue without acid?  he never complains of burning sensation.

He has eaten well today 2 minute sized yogourts 1 cornetto, 1 small portion of supernoodles and 1 round slice of garlic bread. Had no symptoms today. but then again not really many calories either.

He dosnt vomit every day although some days he eats nothing at all.  He vomits now perhaps every other week with one illness or another. Just gotton over a virus? headache and temperature, lethargic and strage though it may be seemed to improve after vomiting and a good sleep.

I went to the doctors myself today and whilst he was their he stood on the scales he is 11 killograms is this a healthy weight for a four year old - does any one know?.

Behaviour wise he is an angel for other people just seems to be awful at home.  Dosnt eat much at other peoples houses either just seems to have better table manners!!!

Sounds like GERD, probably allergy related.  I have a child with GERD and severe feeding issues.  One of her first docs said that many doctors still don't understand that what we used to call "colic" is actually acid reflux.  Vomiting, respitory problems, etc. are par for the course with reflux.  I would look into it.

I dont think or know if your son has autism. Doesnt sound like it. If your truly concerned about that get him tested.

All I am saying is that allergies or gut issues will affect behavior and brain function. it is common in kids with autism. Recent Discover Magazine article is saying thy believe that is WHY kids have Autism . So basically it starts with the body, NOT the brain. Some idiot noted in his studies of Autistic kids 40 yrs. ago that they didnt like to eat, had aversions to foods and had other health issues, but he never bothered to make it known public in his studies. Which could have helped alot of children, heck they may have had a cure or at least a way to detect better by now. BUT also children and adults may have behavior issues because of the gut issues and NOT be autistic (does this make sense?)

If you got the impression your doctor wasnt interested then see someone else. find out what she tested him for. Another thing to get tested is his Thyroid. Take him to see a Homeopathic or Naturopatchic doctor. And contrary to what doctors, teachers, friends may tell you. DO NOT get him immunized anymore. If you have a problem at school all you have to do ais sign something saying for "religous reasons" you dont immunize.

My son is not autistic, but was once at risk for it. He is delayed in his speech (Hard to understand)  He is 4 1/2 thru early intervention, homeoptathic remedies, stop immuinizations, he is a social, happy, alwasy asks alot of questions fun little boy. Read the magazine and book I old you about and get him a good doctor who knows what to look for and can tell you how to help him. You will see a world of difference I promise.
When I stopped immunizing my son at 2 no more ear infections, not hardly ever sick, dark circles got better. There are alot of parents who are getting smart and arent feeding into all of what typical pediatricians say.
Yes alot of kids are immunized and they turn out fine, but you never know when your child is gona be the one who wont. Dont worry, just take action.

Another thing to look for as far as allergies is take him off of something for a while and see if you see a difference. Give it a month or 2 with each item.

You also adressed your son's dislike with writing and coloring. This is a motor planning problem. My son has the same issue, althugh it has improved with time and Occupational Therapy.

Hiya,

Thank you for your thoughts - to answer your questions - yes my son is up to date with his immunisations.

I took him to see a paediatrician last year who found no abnormalaties - however to be honest i really got the impression that she was uninterested.

She did take blood samples which appartently came back negative and said that he was not allergic to cows milk.

My son is always very pale but i wouldnt say that he has dark circles under the eyes.

What are the main charachteristics of autism? is your son Autistic?.  Sorry dont mean to sound rude but to be honest dont really know a great deal about it.
I think that my son is a very strong willed little boy who is testing the bounderies but i am at the end of my tether with his health and behaviour - dont know what to do next.

He is very forward with regards to speach and imagination its like having a conversation with an adult.  Does this sound like Autism?  sorry to ramble on about this but it never crossed my mind I always thought he was too forward for his age with speach and now you have gotten me worried (sorry) He just wont be shown how to do anything with regards to writting and colouring he wants to do it and then gets frustrated and breaks the crayon or bangs the toy that wont work and breaks it.  He is really bad for hitting at the moment if he cant get his own way.  Happiest when outdoors kicking a football.

Your child problems are very symptomatic of many young boys, including boys with autism. (I am not saying your son is Autistic at all)
You son has gut issues, meaning he has allergies.
I would be willing to bet he was immunized.
First suggestions, stop immunizing him.
Take him to see a homeopathic or naturopathic doctor
You can "detox" him with a healthy diet and supplements (probiotics, B12, Omegas)
Get him tested for allergies (wheat gluten, dairy, soy) these are usually the BIGGEST culprits.
My son has some of the issues your describe, along with the long months of colic, still wont eat alot of stuff, hates meal time.
I took this homeopathic approach and he improved ALOT.
There is a very good book Vaccines, Autism and Childhood disorders
Crucial Data that could save your childs life BY Neil Z. Miller
I am not at all saying I think your son is autistic, but he does have the very similar gut issues kids with developmental problems have.
Also there is an excellent article in Discover Magazine April 2007
The gut affects the brain VERY much!
