2 1/2 yr old & sleeping a lot

I have a godson who is 2and a half yrs old now nearing 3yrs old in March. Recently he has not been into eating, been sleeping at night and a lot more during the day and saying some very strange things. Today i went round and he was screaming inconsolably for 2hours solid, like it was a night terror but he was aware of the presence of us. He kept asking for mummy then telling mummy to go away and when i walked into the room he hid his face and ran to his mum as if he was really scared ( i know this child very very well and im almost like his 'auntie' ) been thru everything with him and see him a lot. When i arrived, he had taken his pants and trousers off and said, i have to go out in the cold with no trousers cos ive been naughty' that really scared me cos no 2yr old would just 'think that up' he mjst have learnt that from sumwhere? and his scared behavious made me feel sad for him wondering what the hell was rong with him? his mum comforted him when he wanted to be comforted and he eventually slept on her for another 3 hours in the afternoon, when we tried to wake him to go out he started up again with the screaming/crying inconsolable behaviour. But then suddenly he just laid down and went to sleep straight away like nothing had happened and the next time he woke up a futher 2hrs later he was so happy like nothing had happened...this behavious has scared me, mostly because his comments made me wonder if they were playing on his mind? was someone hurting him at nursery? did another kid put the idea into his head? i just dont know but am worried because apparently it has been going on for 4 weeks now. he sleeps loads in the day, wont eat and has these terrors...what could it be?

i agree he needs some kind of help, he only lives with his mum, the father hasnt been around since she became pregnant so thats consistent in his life so no issue there. It was just so strange to see it happen in the day, and i dont even know if he just started screaming randomly or was asleep before it happened...his mum seems to think another child from nursery has said something to him to scare him and / or is being abused and this child is telling my godson the stuff that happens to them...would that have an impact on my godson alone, surely he would be too young to understand this unless its happening to him. Im more inclined to think someone is abusing him? although there is not a mark on his body, no signs of head inj, and i only saw him 2 days before that and he was happy as larry playing on me and being cheeky as usual, im jus so worried cos of the things he apparently said to his mum. But apparently hes fine again today :S

I agree with margy that this child needs help - has he had a head injury recently?

These do sound like night terrors - if he's waking up from naps in this weird sleep state of noting that people are in the room but not recognizing them,  having tantrums asking for his mother when she's right there,  then falling to sleep and waking later with no memory of the incident this does sound like night terrors.

I had a two year old son that had them and he'd wake about an hour after going to bed for the night,  crying for me,  but would push me away and not appear to recognize me.  It would go on for 45 minutes or so,  until he kind of "came out of it" and would look around like he was kind of bewildered about how he got in my lap,  and go back to sleep soundly.

He had been dropped on his head that week at the church nursery and had suffered a mild concussion.

I wonder if this is what happened to your God son?  Some kids just begin night terrors during this time with no apparent cause.

My pediatrician recommended putting him in the shower - you have to go in with him,  and the warm water wakes them up apparently.  Anyway,  worked for my pediatrician,  we never tried it.

Best wishes.
