There are different cholesterol levels checked, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and the Total. The Total is a combination of the HDL and LDL. The American Heart Association recommends Total cholesterol to be 180 or below. LDL to be 100 or below and HDL to be 40 to 60. Those are the usual guidelines doctors use. good luck
