My 9 Year old Shar Pei has been diagnosed with Kidney failure

I was told his Bun is 45 and Creatine is 598, they said he should be really ill, he suffers Shar Pei fever when stressed out, so I sat with him for 9 hours while he had fluid to cleanse his Kidneys, his Bun went down from 43 to 35, but a week later it has risen to 45, but his Creatine has come down to 598. My boy is still quite perky, and eating chicken fillet and rice. I have tried him on the Royal CKD food, but after 2 days he was not interested. He is also on 10mg Fortekor. He is not bringing his food up, and is still wanting to go for a walk.I have looked all over, and came across this help page, and would greatly appreciate any help available.

Hi. Could you have a read of my article at the following link:

http://www.infobarrel.com/My_10-Point_Plan_for_Dogs_with_Kidney_Failure

as that will help get you familiar with some very important protocols regarding canine kidney disease. Do you know what the phosphorous blood level is in the test results? Creatinine will be brought down with the fluids, but it may take time.

Did the vet do a blood pressure check? This is very important, because 90% of dogs with kidney failure have high blood pressure - and it causes a decline in kidney function, so needs treating quickly. Enalapril is my choice of medication for dogs with high blood pressure and kidney disease.

If you are using chicken and rice ... make sure the chicken is human-grade poultry (higher quality protein) and the rice should be sticky white rice, not ordinary long-grain.

I would start adding probiotics, organic salmon oil, vitamin E supplement (canine formulated), CoQ10, Rehmannia 8, as additions to the food.

Royal Canin kd food (canned) is a good choice of food, unless you are home cooking. To make it seem tastier to your dog, drizzle a teaspoon of organic honey over the top of it OR add a small amount of cooked green tripe OR a little yogurt.
