I just want to get into old age without gagging for breath.
I know lungs decline naturaly, I just want an idea if I have enough lung function to get me to old age without gasping for air.
I was diagnosed in Oct. 07 with moderate stage COPD. I am still up and functioning. Maybe not like I use to, but I am also slowing down, due to the fact that I am 52. Just eat healthy, exercise, do not smoke, get flu and pneumonia shots and try to avoid people that are ill. I had an uncle that was in the end stage of COPD. Docs told him he would live 18 mths. He ended up living over 8 yrs. And that is in the end stage mind you. As we age, our lung function goes down naturally. Even those that do not smoke. I asked my doctor since I stopped smoking, would I live to be an old woman. My doctor reply was, "I see no reason why not." And my doctor sugar coats nothing. I also have an only sibling with COPD. Like me, he is up and functioning. This is not the death sentence you may think it is. My uncle when he was finally dying, actually took some gasps of breath and was gone. Rather peaceful actually. I agree with the other posts. Use commom sense. And I promise you that you have years yet. It is a scary disease I know. I have been there and still at times I get scared. But enjoy your life. I am still going and so is my brother.
I'm just so scared due even more to the 16mm bullea on my ct scan,
Your condition is not very serious. Don't go planning your funeral. Using common sense you have decades to look forward to. DON'T SMOKE!
