Question to Cirrhotics reg.Platelets

hello everybody,

in the past 2 years my platelets have been around 170-190,but in tha last 2 months they gone down to 163 and now 159.
i have seen on several sites that platelets under 150 are a strong indicator of cirrhosis and portal hypertension.

iam soon 2 years SVR and in the US the spleen is not enlarged, bloodflow also normal like anything else.

fibroscan is 10.2.

i wonder how is your platelets?and if you have portal hypertension.

as i feel still sick and sicker the only reason for me is i have a worsening cirrhosis despite  i reached SVR.

i feel nauseas and in the evening pain everywhere,in the morning i feel something lke "normal" but as the day goes by the pain in muscle and joints become more severe.

any opinions
Marc

Hi

Those don't generally sound like symptoms of decompensated cirrhosis. Decompensated cirrhosis is ascities sometime to the point of looking like the patient is pregnant, esophageal varicies from portal hypertension with the possibility of a dangerous bleeding episode, and the development of hepatic encephathalopathy. Also the development of jaundice yellow eyes and ski tone.

Maybe your stress and anxiety could be contributing somewhat to your symptoms?

Also there are other conditions that can cause elevations of bilirubin keep working with your doctors on finding out what is going on. I am not by any means a medical professional but I just don't think your symptoms are from cirrhosis.

So sorry you are still having to search for solutions to have good health. I hope your doctors can find the answer soon for you so you can return to having a good quality of life.

Best regards
Lynn

So far My AST is still in normal range but my LT has climbed back to 55 so above normal. The good news is my platelet count has gone up to 98 so thats something.

Should have my viral load back Monday or Tuesday

My platelets have been running between 65 and 85 over the past six months but I remain compensated and all my labs are just fine. I also have portal hypertension and an enlarged spleen.

Did my tests yesterday more test than I originally thought.

They are running a viral load test and also LFP and CBC.

Glad they are doing that as the LFP and CBC will be back before the viral load and if my liver functions are still in normal range that would be very encouraging. I am also curious about platelets as they have been between 80 and 90 for the last several years so it would be exciting indeed to see those improve but not holding my breath for that.

Hoping to hear something soon
good luck to everyone

hello nan,

thank you for your help.
I reached SVR with the incivek.treatment.
the sides were horrible for me,compared to my treatment in 2008 with peg.inf/riba it was like night and day.
I became very anemic, needed bloodtranfusions and epo.
I have to say that I didn't feel well already before I started tx and as I started it was like a truck hit me.

I guess the interferon did some damage, alltough iam thankful for beeing cured,it was my third attempt.
I wish you and your husband all the best and hope he became SVR.I've read many posts from you and know he's gone thru hell.

So sorry you are feeling so poorly. Which treatment helped you to reach SVR?  Depending on what treatment it was, you may be suffering from its after effects. Here is a link to a "post treatment" community where you may find some help from others who are suffering from long term effects of treatment.

The fact that your US and MRI are normal is a wonderful thing. But you should not give up on trying to find out the cause of your debilitating symptoms. You may need to find another doctor.

I wish you the best in getting to a healthier life.

I have since 1 year elevated bilirubin from 1mg/dl up to 2.5 it goes up and down.
alltough the direct part is mostly normal, that's why my docs think its a variant of gilbert wich I was tested negative.
but I feel just every day more sick, with nausea, stomach pain, joint and muscle pain everywhere, especially in the evenings.
have no appetite at all and iam severe depressed with severe anxiety and desperation.
I thought since iam SVR I will one day start feelin better, but its just going downhill and iam scared of what is coming next.
I just not understand why as my other labs,US,and MRI all were normal.

Hi Rexx

What makes you feel your liver is starting to fail?

I hope that is not what is happening

Good luck

Hi Marc

Not sure of the specific scale I guess they can vary between different labs but above 150 on the tests I do is normal.

My platelets have been in the 80-90 range for the last several years. I have a slightly enlarged spleen at 15.3 cm on my last ultrasound which was an increase from 6 months earlier from 13.9 cm. I have also had esophageal varicies which required banding as well as a small amount of ascities. I haven't specifically been told I have portal hypertension but judging by my symptoms I assume I do.

It seems to me at least right now as long as your platelets are in normal range I expect you are fine test results always vary from time to time. Maybe eat more spinach or other platelet boosting foods kale. Here is an article from livestrong

http://www.livestrong.com/article/127280-foods-increase-blood-platelets/#page=1

But always keep your doctor in the loop and if you have concerns about your platelet results ask.

Good luck
